Multitool suggestions?

I spent years using one of the old style Leatherman Waves, and more recently went to a Victorinox Spirit. Both are excellent tools that I would put my trust into, but the Victorinox edges out the Leatherman here. Tool functionality is pretty close in my use, but the Victorinox feels more polished, a bit nicer fit and finish, and better ergonomics.

No one has asked yet...what do you use mainly?...the pliers, the drivers, the blades...

Each tool has it's own pros and cons.

Confession, I dont use one on a regular basis. Just nice to have when you do need one. Knife isnt my main concern since I awlays have some sort of knife on me.

I guess i am in the minority here i had a leatherman wave read on here how everyone loves the Victorinox tools better i ordered a swiss tool a spirit and gave my wave away. About a week later i bought a wave again and gave the Victorinoxs away as gifts. So just because a majority of the people here like them better doesn't mean you will. It would be best if you could go handle them side by side first at the store before buying.

I'll still stick with my SOG powerlock......It's never failed me and fit's my
hands perfectly.
Regards Sonny

i have the leatherman new wave. i think it is a pretty good multitool. i had some no name one from home depot for about 10 years, it held up great but was a little too big. it had both needle nose and regular pliers on it.

i got my leatherman for about $55 after tax from Fry's Electronics which was it's best selling point.

my only complaint is that it does not have wire stripper holes like my other one does. those come in so handy.

I have two older Leatherman multi tools, which I used for years:thumbup:. They gave me great service, only problem with them when using the knife was it tried to close:thumbdn:, which could lead to serious injury. Can't comment on others never owned either one.

Leatherman Wave all the way. I have beat the hell out of mine for years. I have the removable pocket clip on mine which is pretty damn handy. It's a little heavy for pocket carry, but it's doable. One of these days I would love to have a Charge, but for now my Wave is my #1 Multitool.
When I want to go a little lighter, I carry my Skeletool CX. It's great too, but when I carry it, I miss the saw on the Wave. :D

I've owned SOG, Kershaw (when they still offered it) Gerber, Leatherman, and Victorinox Swiss Tools and the only ones I still have are one SOG Tool Clip from way back and three Swiss Tools, one my old original version when they first came out and two X models one with scissors and one without. In my opinion, much as I liked the Wave model for some of the features, none of these compare to the quality or the build toughness of the Vic.

I suggest you go with the SOG powerassist. I love the strong pliers, and the redesigned head is great. I use my multi everyday. The outside opening blade is a plus, and much better than on my older powerlock. Plus you can swap out the tools in the handle if you want.

Leatherman Charge because the blades are easiest to deploy, it has the removeable bit driver, and 154CM steel.

victorinox is my first vote best fit and finish of any multi tool.
leatherman is good to, but there has been reports of people breaking them and spotty QC. Leatherman does beat vic in the warranty department though.
the older SOG tools were good but they have dropped the ball recently.

I've been using a Gerber Pro Scout multi lock for about 8 years now, haven't broken it yet. Haven't tried to break it, but I'm the guy who gets a Craftsman ratchet replaced about once a year, I'm a little rough on tools.

i loved my wave when i first got it but i dont use it much these days, if i were to buy a new one i would go for a vic spirit or maybe just a skeletool

Bought a SOG eod and promptly returned it - it felt flimsy compared to my leatherman wave. I've had a wave for about 7 years now and its just a great quality tool.

With that said, I have a really old leatherman PSTII that I use most frequently due to how damn light it is!

Anyway, between SOG and Leatherman, I'd suggest Leatherman hands down.

Never owned a Vic.

Confession, I dont use one on a regular basis. Just nice to have when you do need one. Knife isnt my main concern since I awlays have some sort of knife on me.

Then consider how much you want to spend. And if you have a knife on you then consider what you can need the most.
A lot of ppl are saying Leatherman Charge and Wave. And to be honest they are great tools. But with you having a knife on you and their biggest pros coming from one hand opening blades, it's a bit redundant. Plus the TTi version goes for around 120$ (lowest I saw it was for 110$).

It really comes down to your preference. Now seeing that you won't carry it around all the time you should really consider going with a full size multitool.
here are some that you might want to look into:
Leatherman Kick
Leatherman Blast
Leatherman Core
Leatherman Supertool 300
Leatherman Wave (I know what i said about the knife issue, but still a damn good tool)
Leatherman Charge AL (I know what i said about the knife issue, but still a damn good tool)
SOG Powerlock
Victorinox Spirit (just make sure you check the models and get the one you like the most, personally I have the X model)
Victorinox Swisstool (there are also X and RS models, and personally out of the 3 I'd suggest you check out the X model the most)

Unless you need it right now I'd say wait. ESEE has confirmed they're working on a multi-tool and if you can afford to hold off for a bit you might as well wait and see what they offer.
