Here's a clue.
A research paper was written by an English Professor of anthropology at the University of Nottingham and a hack knife maker with a two bit handle supply business. The paper traces 9th century trade routs from northern Europe to the Middle East, and focuses on this mysterious handle material.
 
How about mammoth ivory, or possibly elephant. The white elephant of Rucheni. :)

Sorry, no one has it yet. The clues I gave should help you nail it down, I've spoken of it in past threads. One more clue, It is a Middle Eastern word that rhymes with "clue"
