"Must have" tools and equipment?

You don't necessarily need to spend much money to get started. I dropped by the local granite countertop supply - they let me have a nice piece of granite from the scrap pile. Although not "precision ground", it's still pretty flat.

Since then, I have picked up a 3" thick precision block, and still prefer sanding on the piece of scrap.

Ha ah ha, yea I can see the handle material piling up already, that's too funny! I actually cleaned out a drawer in a tool box to hold knife making materials, and it's mostly woods and bone/antler materials. The granite counter top isn't a horrible idea at all, I may have to see what I can find for now. After the belt grinder, I think my biggest thing will be building a forge here at home so I can do it all here, not have to split it up between home and work. This is good stuff.

I got a used 2x42 craftsman and it will suffice. However after making a couple of knives I am building a coote based grinding table. Don't buy an inferior tool.

A good storage box for supplies is nice. I built a workbench out of an old welding table and then broke a sheet of galvinised metal over it and used 2x6 for edging to make it more sturdy and knee "friendly. The sheet makes it easy to clean and good for work. This would be simple for you.
