Mutilate Your Buck

Construction then. I thought perhaps you were either going hunting or answering an ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine. :)

Oh, no. This has nothing to do with military schemes, most notably Kony 2012—which, by astonishing coincidence, began about 6 months after oil was found in Uganda. This is a trip nearly two years in the making, with lots of fundraising beneath our belts.

I use the 119 and a Bear MGC skinner (their fixed blades are much better than their folders and definitely worth a look for cheap beaters) for utility slicers in the backwoods, and a Wenger SAK in my toiletry kit for clipping nails and other small maintenance chores. I have the 110 for urban environments and I hope to get a Becker BK7 for chopping soon. My knives are all users and I'm on a budget, so I'll be content then.

The knife, though looking a bit worse for wear, is much more comfortable now. But what have you guys been doing about the sheathe? I was considering molding the plastic insert but realized that would not work. Should I heat up the leather and try to mold it to reduce rattle?

Ruining the warranty is not a big deal if you made the knife more to your liking.
Since getting a buffer isn't likely in your budget, just get progressively finer sand paper, 400, 600, 800, 1200, and then get some buffing compound, automotive or whatever you have available, and you can work it back to the shine it had.

I would work the scratch out with 150 or 220 grit paper first.

It don't look bad. I had a kabar with a top gaurd that always got in the way, so I see where you're coming from. From your post is seems like its going to be a user so whatever works for you. I would like to hear how the knife did on your trip if you get a chance to share it with us. Good luck and stay safe!

I leave on the 22nd and return in early April. If the knife does anything noteworthy I'll keep you guys in touch. Honestly this would be the only reason to worry about the warranty at all; tools are rare over there, especially American ones, and I may be asked to lend it out. So far it's only been used to slice apples and synthetic fencing at the job I held at the local ski lift.

I'll also get one of the local knives to share, if we get a chance to go to the market again. The one I got last time is in my dad's kit as a skinner.

Please let us know how the Ghana trip goes! How long will you be there? Why (if you don't mind my asking)?

As for the knife, it is a tool, if it works better for you then drive on! I respect the mods you made to make it better fit your needs. Please keep us posted on it's performance and when you get back from using it on your trip thinks you would do/not do to improve it.

Godspeed to you.

If you hit it with 400 grt and then 600 grt it should start to get smooth enough. After the 600 grt you can rub it down with 0000 steel wool. that will just about get out all the scratches and if you have a buffing wheel and some black and red compounds. you can do all the same on the aluminum as well as the phonolic handle.

the only problem with steel wool is it can leave bits inside the knife which will rust.

 thanx for that gem of info MBJ...I have a two line 105 in need of some re-sto coming soon :)

Never had that happen, I have used it in the final stages of cleaning up knives for years. Plausibility is there, but probability is far off...

Most of my knives are folders and that's where my mind was, forgetting this was a sheath knife with no voids for the steel wool to get into.

I would just cut a piece of bicycle inter tube, put it on the handle and call it done.

When I was a kid I wanted a Buck 119 SO BAD , that was "THEE" hunting knife to have..The guys who had that knife cherished it , back in the day it was one of the more expensive hunting knives.. I ended up getting a Schrade Sharpfinger for Christmas instead,my Santa was on a budget....I will say, that Schrade never let me down . It gutted out and field dressed at least five deer, cleaned up a bunch of rabbits and squirrels before I left for the service at age 18... Over the years I've aquired several Buck knives but for some reason or another,,never a 119...My B-DAy is in May , maybe the wife will get me one..

Nice mod but I could never do that to a 119..Your post reminded me of the good ol days and thought I'd share..Thanks

Went to the local thrift store today. Got four pairs of painting and carpenter-styled work pants in light cotton for $32. We drop our packs off at the church on Wednesday and leave the day after.

I ordered a Becker BK7 today and Amazon has promised me it will arrive Wednesday. I'm gonna be really tempted to christen it in Ghana but I know I made an obligation to you guys. Don't let me be lulled off the path of 420HC righteousness!

On a related note, I chopped with the knife today by choking back near the pommel, and the "new" handle really did some unexpected wonders for grip.
