my answer to multitools

Merry Christmas everyone,

I would like to discuss my alternative to carrying a Leatherman or SAK. This is my solution. I EDC a Ontario rat 1 and Gerber shard. This combo is a killer way to not have to carry a clunky Swiss army knife, or Leatherman. The Ontario Rat 1 is my knife of choice, it is cost effective, tough and it has a good steel. Of course most single blade folding knife will be fine, (your personal choice.) Now to the main reason my I posted this thread, the Gerber shard, many people overlook this tool as for your keychain only. I believe that you can carry it along with your folding knife of choice and your result will be something pretty dang close to a multi-tool. Just like I said about folding knives you don't have to carry a Gerber shard their may be other brands you prefer, buy whatever you like, my purpose for this is not to tell you what to buy, but simply to inspire you to try this new idea I have. For around $6 you can by a shard and with it you can open beer, screw in screws, pull a nail, and pry open tough objects. With this tool paired with your knife I think you will be surprised at how many different tasks you can accomplish.

Happy holidays, stay sharp!

What do you do about a loose nut?
Cut a piece of wire or cable?
Saw through some drywall to run a cable through?
Pry open a pastry tip that some knucklehead got his finger stuck in?

I ask because these are all scenarios I used my leatherman for this year alone :D

rcb2000, Thank you for your feedback I love to hear what other knife lovers think of my ideas. My answer to your question is this. By carrying a Gerber sharp I add a screwdriver, and cap lifter to my EDC this is good for me because I usually have to get by with a knife alone. I own many multi-tools and I like them, but maybe you can understand where Im coming from when I called multi-tools "clunky" maybe this isn't an issue for you and if so more power to you, as for me I like as many features on my tools without having to sacrifice weight or size. Thank you for your time!

Carry what works for you. Personally, when I discovered one piece multitools I thought they were fantastic, but I discovered they actually didn't work well for me when it came time to put them to use. Personally, I carry a large modern folder in my right front pocket, usually a Manix 2 XL, a smaller SAK style knife loose in my left front pocket for tool selection and as a competent, nonthreatening cutting tool and a Leatherman Surge in my bag for heavier duty issues that may come up.

I hear ya...
On my person is usually my folding knife and then on my keychain is a Gerber shard and a small flashlight. I do always keep my Leatherman in my bag because you are right they are pretty heavy and large but indispensable IMO

Insipid Moniker, I really like your EDC choice, I may start doing it myself, the only questions I have is, do you always have a bag on you to carry your Leatherman and "non threatening tool" in? Have a good one!

I have been carrying Leathermans since they came out. The real secret to getting the max use out of them is to use them often to get used to them. Most of my jobs over the decades were made easier by using them, most times on a daily basis. Part of my EDC is a LM Ti, a LM Supertool 300, and a Kershaw A-100 multi tool. I have no worries over the weight, since childhood if I had pockets they were full. The more pockets the better.

Taylor the tools you carry to the situations you find yourself in. I thought I needed to carry a Leatherman on my person, after 3 weeks and no use I decided that carrying in my EDC bag and having it close at hand when needed was good enough. I also tried keychain tools but again I found myself never using them and they just ended up being extra weight on my person. I carry a folder and a flashlight everyday because I use both just about everyday for something in addition to my phone, wallet and keys. These suffice for 99% of the situations I find myself in.

The SAK goes in a pocket, the bag comes with me most of the time, but I'll happily admit there are times I leave it at home.

Not a bother. Lightweight. I really like it.

I carry a Juice S2 on my belt every day and have done so for about 3 years. My main reason for having an MT on me at all times is for the pliers. A Gerber Shard could never replace that.

Vic rambler seems to offer a lot more utility for the realestate they take up. Bottle opener, toothpick, tweezers, scissors, knife, flat and philips head, nail file, and unlike the classic the rambler blade opens away from the key ring so it's not awkward to use.

Cool, I just got a wingman from my dad for xmas.

I always carry a folder in my pocket usually a zt561, I've got multi tools stashed in my truck, on my saddle, around the house and in a bag in the truck as well. If I'm actually working on something I drop one in a pocket, but they are usually close to hand when needed. Think they are all different variations of Gerbers, I've used a couple of them for 20 years.

I wear glasses, so I carry a SwissTool Screwzall. The small straight blade width has been narrowed and thinned a little to fit the screws on my glasses.

I carry this one. Aside from my knives this tool gets used the most. Gotta say, it's stood up to a lot of dumb crap. Still works fine and doesn't look that bad. The blades in there are probably the least used (as in I've never used them) part of the LM.

Leatherman Sidekick or Wingmaster, has a pocket clip, I carry everyday on my left pocket, I never feel it, but I sure do use it

Those pliers are indispensable. To me, a multi tool just ain't a multi tool without those pliers. I know some people can do without.
