my answer to multitools

Those pliers are indispensable. To me, a multi tool just ain't a multi tool without those pliers. I know some people can do without.

I agree. That is why I carry one. Mostly for the pliers. I have other tools and SAKs I can carry. Gotta have those pliers. So this thread is an answer to a question I won't be asking.

The original Leatherman PST (I had one) was a shift from multitools that preceded it. It was primarily pliers, with other tools in the handles. Whereas Swiss Army Knives were primarily folding knives, with other tools added. Even though both are truly multitools, that term is more associated with the pliers-based descendants of the PST than with the folding knife style exemplified by SAK's. At least, this has been my impression in speaking with people.

I think it depends on what you are most likely to need a tool for. I tend to need pliers more than anything else so if I am most likely to carry a traditional multitool, although they are larger and harder to carry.

And true story- I have twice been stranded with a group of people out in the country at night with headlights in our vehicle not working, and we used the pliers in my Leatherman to fix them so we could drive back into town.
