My Barehead Jack fixation

Man! That Western Castrator is awesome!

We all need to talk GEC into doing a barehead 2 blade jack and have them put extra attention into the bone jigging! I would buy all I could find!
If you don't mind a serpentine or reverse dogleg handle then there is this Tidioute they made last year.

I have that knife Trand and it's a really good 'un. The colour is more caramel/toffee than the advert shows.

The Northfield version in Ebony is also Barehead, that' one of my prized knives too.

Thanks, Will

Bernie Levine owned that knife once, Robin. It inspired him to write an article about the HBC.
We don't know for sure who made it, but it might be German. It is the only one either of us has ever seen. The Hudson's Bay Museum turned down an offer to buy it from Bernie. For half of what I paid for it!!

Hi Charlie, Have had the same experience with the HBC Museum/Archives when they turned down a Very important piece. Unfortunately museums rarely have the money. Great knife, GREAT knife.

Best regards

Robin

Here's an old Swan with a sheepsfoot. This knife will rip your thumbnail off :o.

Best regards

Robin

That oldish German Jack has some mighty fine Patina, Duncan.
Knife - $100 - $200
Patina - Priceless!!

Here is a Waterville Cutlery Heavy Barehead Jack. It would be interesting to know what prompted knife companies the make these thick-bladed Jacks. I can imagine some uses, but wonder what the actual ones were.

It is nice to find Rosewood on an old barehead Jack. I'm not 100% sure of the species of the wood, but it is dense, and has a nice deep reddish hue. Empire was one of the biggest cutleries in America, and made knives, and blades, for many other makers and retailers.

Too bad someone defaced an otherwise full blade.

Here's a few custom knives to add to the pile:
