My Barehead Jack fixation

Elliot, incredible array (unsurprising, but no less beautiful for that).

Who made this one, and did you have input into the bolster design?

Thank you, Sarah. That is by Don Morrow. His wife did the engraving on the bolster. (According to Don, it's the first one he ever had her do.)
I had no input...it's one of the relatively few pieces I own that I found on a purveyor's site originally and just had to have. I've had much contact with Don about the knife both in person and on the phone.

Trust me when I tell you that the image fails completely to capture just now nice a job Don and his missus did on this knife. (And perhaps the best matched bone stag I have seen.)

Awesome collection, Elliott. I like the way you have personal connections with various makers.
Something mostly impossible with antiques, unless you buy from a friend. Or make a friend of a seller.

Another big, heavy Jack - Fulton.

Thanks, Charlie. As you already know well yourself, having a relationship with the maker pretty much always enhances the experience.

I do admire those stately old knives, however. Of course I feel a lot more confident buying them when you and I are walking the aisles at the Blade Show together. ;)

Hey Charlie, aren't you cheating just a little? That Fulton's got a cap!

:p

Well . . . . oops. . . .it's just a little cap . . . . .:o

Thanks, Frank. Imagine if I had invested that money wisely? :p

(Actually, I do consider it well spent, especially since it went toward supporting the careers of many good folks.)

Dont feel so bad...I have 14 guitars! Dont ask me how many amps I have!

Well, we don't need any help or interventions. We can quit anytime we want () and life's too short to sweat the small stuff anyway! ;)

Elliot...man you have some beautiful knives there Sir! I was about to start naming a few of the Makers of what blew me away...but every single one of those customs are just staggering, Just beautiful knives. Your comment about walking down and buying a knife with Charlie as adviser would be a great experience!
Charlie,...I just done know how you do it Sir...but those are amazing, and I see what you mean by massive blades! The spring on that Waterville is just out of this world with width! I have never handled a slippie like that!
Mike...I have run out of older Barehead Jacks apart from a couple, here is one of them - Johnathan Crookes...

Duncan each and every one of the is pure gold, Charlie and Elliot words would not be enough to describe what I feel when looking at your beauties.
Mike

Duncan, thanks for the kind words but you're obviously no slouch yourself in the great knives department.

I'm very happy and fortunate when it comes to the custom knives as I have had at least some sort of a relationship with many of the makers whose work I own and I cherish that aspect of the hobby.

On the other hand, I love the grand old knives of yesteryear but own and have read just enough books and possess just enough knowledge on the subject to know that I really don't know enough not to be fooled by a good counterfeit. Happens to the best, just ask Charlie and other collectors with amazing collections of vintage knives.

Having someone like Charlie walking the aisles with you when searching for these beauties makes for a doubly pleasant experience...a) for the company of a friend...and b) for his critical eye.

Thanks again. I've really been enjoying looking at everyone's knives here.

Mike, thank you also for your kind words.

Yes I have been stuck with a few "fiddled" knives. Not lately though - it is the school of hard knocks that teaches you to look harder, and trust your intuition rather than your glee!!

That said, some of my best knives have come from the 'Bay; and the Oregon Knife Show in April.

Now here is a pair of quintessential traditional barehead Jacks. A couple of my favorites!!

Thank you for that Elliot, like Mike says, when we see yours, Charlies, SK,s it makes us realise just what level we can reach in the world of knives-its great!
Charlie, those two are beauties for sure, I love the Clip Point!
Thanks for the wonderful eye candy everyone!

I want to thank Dave for opening this thread, and somehow dragging people like Elliott and Charlie to show some of their beauties. Personally, I don't think I would appreciate enough the fact of owning such collections myself (at least not as much as they deserve), but I do know that I would love to go through the process of knowledge and search and hunt, and even without keeping any knife, I would still consider myself a very rich man.
