My Bark River Golok Came!

I have achieved a whole new level in my relationship with my postman... He brought my Golok yesterday. My wife bought a used one off e-bay a while back, but it had no ground edge. I sent it back to Mike Stewart at BRKT and he told me that it was the 1st prototype golok. I told them that I really wanted a working knife and Mike said he would send me new one (Grampa - I did call Donna, but my new one was already on the way, sorry).

Anyhow, mine came in green micarta and after a brief test, I have decided that it will become my chief weapon in the war on wild roses (it sails through them). I think the weight makes it more effective for the task... The only thing I would change on the golok is the sheath (hmmm, I wonder what Ilbruche is up to...). Like my Rogue, the golok sheath is not equipped with loop, it has a slide-through sewn to the back. I find the set-up to be rigid, and the grip pokes me in the side. Overall, I love the way this knife feels, everyone needs one these!

very sweet blade...shame about the sheath...a baldric rig would solve that.

i really want one bad...santa?

i got to hold one and take a whak or two on some wood at the CT gathering...very sweet.

I went with the G10 in Forest Green for my Golok...just waiting. Thanks for the teaser review as it helps to wet my appetite!

No worries, sir! I've talked to them too, and they should be sending it on - they just wanted to "clean it up" a bit!

If it actually arrives, I'll owe you one, for sure!

About the sheath - they actually did a bit of a survey before they finalized the sheath, and most folks who answered said they wouldn't wear it on a belt, but strap it on a pack. If you check with a BRKT dealer like KnivesShipFree, they offer a drop loop you can attach to the belt loop thingie, and turn it into a lower riding sheath. (The link clicky thing will take you right there.) Clever gadget!

To everybody waiting for theirs; You won't be disappointed based on my initial impressions. I am thinking I will need another (just for back-up, you know...)

J - Don't resist, you need one!

Grampa - I am glad that worked out! Thanks for the sheath tip, I'll check it out..

M22 - Got it directly from Bark River in a trade with Mike Stewart.... Good people over there, IMHO..

Another option for carry is a Baldric. Sharpshooter Sheath Systems (same guys who make all of Mike Stewart's sheaths) has an incredible leather one or some people use paracord.

Okbohn,

Thanks, a baldric would be good, I'm gonna take a look at that option. I really like this knife, it is like everything that I handled from BRKT,; very nice....

mneedham...I like it ..I gotta get me one now to go with my Bravo 1.....that looks awesome..I bet it cuts great !

TTD - Yep, based on a couple of days of playing around, I would say it cuts great. Big Ox summed it up when he said it was "an 11" straight razor that every outdoorsman needs to own". This blade is special, IMHO. We'll see others say as they get issued....

Mine arrived yesterday. Haven't used it outdoors yet, but I can say that the 11" straight razor description is right on. This is definitely a special blade.

Mine just came in and the bastard is bent!!!!!!!

I sure it will all be resolved, but I am pissed off after waiting so long only to recieve a bent knife that should have never left the factory..

Its bent bya good 2-3mm and is obviously a heat treat issue.

Just got one in ... wanted one with that lovely tiger micarta handle.

Looks great in every way ... BUT!!! Like Perksy, mine is bent at least 3 mm towards the tip. Heat treat issue? Maybe ...

Looks like BRKT has an 'issue' or 'challenge' ... or maybe even 'problem.'

OP & Persky,

Wow, that really stinks... I was thinking when I originally posted this, that every Bark River I had, or handled, had a great fit and finish... It probably goes with out saying, but I'm sure Mike will make it right..

HDW - Get out and play with your yet?

It's not horrible, really. But I think we'd best let Mr. Stewart know -- I don't think he'll be happy.

I've quite a few other Barkies -- no problem with any of them.

We're all human. Mistakes happen. I'm not upset. :)

Wow. I bet there are more than two bent goloks floating around. What I can't understand, is how they wern't noticed when they were being finished.
