My Bushcraft Knife - Take 2

A while ago, I did a post on my bushcraft knife design.

I had another heat treated blank that I decided to finish out with many of the recommendations that you guys made. Not all, but quite a few.

They include:
- Extending the grind closer to the handle.
- Tapering the scales near the blade edge. I was not able to taper these all the way blade. There is a small edge on there, but it seems to work fine. When experimenting with the last design, the reverse chest grip was not comfortable. Now, it seems to work rather well.

Also, another big change I made was I know have a fixture for doing the scandi grind. It came out much cleaner and even. I am extremely happy with that.

It is still not perfect. There are some cosmetic things I can work on, but I am not a knifemaker. I consider myself a bushcraft student that just built the knife I wanted. I also didn't spend too much time on the cosmetic things, because this one is going off to be a mold for sheaths.

Anyway.....here are the pics:

Sorry for the blurry pic on this one. But, I think you get the idea.

:eek::eek:Brian. WOW. That is amazing. I love everything about it. The blade shape is right on, the handles look perfect. I love the scandi grind, it looks perfect.:o

:cool:I do believe you are a knifemaker. Thats a great piece Brian. It looks perfect in my eyes, you should be very proud!

Really nice! I like everything about it. The red spacers against the green scales is a nice touch. I can't wait to see what you make next.

Looks Great Brian! How long until you're going to have some these available for sale? (hint- I want on the list!)
What type of sheath are getting a mold for?

Mmm hmm...

Red liners...check.
Green canvas micarta...check.
Leather sheath...check (soon.)

Beautiful.

:)

Great work B.

Crap! More amazing work from a new maker to tempt me! hahahaha I will never give in! :D

Thanks guys. I take it that you like it :D

Wow! Great job-that grind looks perfect! What kind of fixture did you use?

It is a home-made one. The flat platen on my grinder tilts. So, I tilt it to the angle I want the grind to be, which means that my "fixture" pretty much only needs to hold the knife blade at 90 degrees. Because that is all it needs to do, it was pretty easy to come up with something.

I am working 2 different batches. One in O1 and one in A2. I am not doing the heat treat, so I am a bit at the mercy of sending steel around and such. Hopefully soon though.

What type of sheath are getting a mold for?

I am sending this one to the boys at JRE. I was going to have them make two sheath types. Both with firesteel loops. I figured if someone really doesn't want the firesteel loop, you can slice it right off. It is not easy to put back on though :D

One style will be their two loop bushcrafter. It lets you wear it on your belt, but the top loop is good for putting string through or whatever. The second one is going to be their dangler. Which is essentially the two loop bushcrafter with the top loop being used for a ring and belt loop. Both are great designs. That is of course, unless the JRE boys talk me into something else. I am pretty open to suggestions.

Brian,

That is almost EXACTLY the knife that Muskratman makes - but his stock is a little thin - and I think your choice of a thicker stock solves this problem.

It looks great.

Actually, Muskrat Man's knife was in my mind when drawing up the design. As was the Skookum, The Aurora, and Koster's bushcrafter. I think the main difference between this one and the MM is I tried to incorporate the "reverse hourglass" type of handle that the Aurora has.

I have not handled the MM, but it is my understanding that it is not shaped in that direction.

When you say "stock is a little thin" I forgot to mention, the two batches I am making up will have both 1/8" (which this one is) and 5/32" for the folks that like something a touch thicker.

Hmmmm you will have to upgrade to "Knifemaker" pretty soon, methinks. I will be in for a dangler sheath, A2, 5/32!
