I'd buy one too! Magnussen, did you convex grind that blade with just a file? Let's hear a little about that, if you don;t mind.

I like it! Looks real rugged, and for some reason the cord wrap doesn't bother me on that knife, although it does with most knives that use it. Good work!

Not JUST a file I confess... I made the first couple of cuts with a 2" grinder... but it scared the hell out of me (after all the forge work Wally guided me on) and when I took the bulk off I switched to the file... Wally chuckled at me a bit.

With the file I made a series of flats to get the "meat" off... and then did long curved strokes to round out the convex... it was a long process but for the first one of this new prototype I wanted to take my time.

I'm truely flattered at the encouraging responses to this design...

Pitdog and Elen, I'm glad I was able to smooth over what you would normally look at as flaws... you are too kind.

StretchNM and WVHILLS... buy one, eh?... Now you've gone and done it... more to think about... lol.

Stingray... From the prototype I decided to...

-notch out the handle area so the cord wouldn't slide... because I don't intend on epoxying it down. I want the cord to be useable in survival situations.
-I was going to harden the spine but after experimenting with flint and steel I found that a hardend butt would work just as well and give me more strength by having a softer spine.
-the blade is a bit longer and more stock has been removed behind the edge ( its no longer ground like an axe!!... lol)
-I added the palm swell to improve grip.
-the first few prototypes were stock removal... this one is forged... Thanks Wally!

I really want to try something like that. I doubt I'd ever get it to the point that I would want to post pics of it, but I want to give it a go. Man, that thing is nice!

Also, in your very first picture, there looks to be a pretty nice hawk in the background! Better get some pics of that thing up!

That is really very cool. I love the shape of the handle, and seems like it will work well. Great design.

I like the end of the sheath as you folded it over. It allows line to be strung thru to keep the tip from swinging out as you walk. Nice follow through on the knife from start to finish. Looks like a Keepa'!

We did the heat treat today.... (1085 mat'l)

Because I want the butt end hard for "flint and steel" we heated and oil quenched the entire knife. The butt still was not hard enough to throw sparks so we wrapped the blade in wet paper towels and hardened the butt... this time queching it in water.... It worked perfectly!!! I coildn't put it in an oven to temper or I'd lose the hardness on the butt so we used a torch.

Soon it will be done and I'll post pics...

it looks like crap! especially that first one.
you should send it to me so I can get rid of it for you. I'll even pay postage!

j/k

you do things the way I did when I had my forge up and running: out of necessity. There was nothing quite so satisfying as using my own knife. I miss my forge immensly.

Hahahaha! I've got a few other blades that are rough lookin... should I send those too? Just make sure the package isn't ticking when you get it.... lol

Thanks alot, bud!

COOL! I already have a watch, though, unless it's one of those neato Timex watch/compass things.
I like the shape of that first blade a lot. Kind of a Nessmuk lookin' thing. Keep at it...I'd say you might be givin' ol' Skookum and Koster a run for their money in the future. Hell I'd buy one (if I weren't poor white trash!) of 'em.

Kick A$$ Magnussen!

You have inspired me once again to make a bushcraft blade! Dude this is something we all should try at least once to test ourselves. I put in an order for some 1/8" and 3/16" thick flat stock two days ago along with some Micarta. Time to fire up the belt sander and forge!

Here WAS the sheath I was making for the knife....

After lots of measuring, cutting, dyeing, glueing, sewing and riveting... I totally SCREWED IT UP when I applied the hot wax dip :grumpy: ... Yes.... I had the mixture WAY to hot and the sheath shriveled up like a raisin  ... You learn from your mistakes... That was the first time that ever happened to me.... snif, snif.

So here I am now... knife heat treated and ready for finish grinding... NEW improved sheath made (totally riveted) including a successful hot dip... whew... ;)

Thanks for sharing. The whole package ranks very high on the "cool factor" !!!

Here is a pic with the handle wrapped... the residue in between the windings is beeswax... I soaked the handle in melted beeswax to improve grip in wet conditions and it helps keep your hand from chaffing during heavy use. I put it through some tests yesterday... carving, chopping, splitting, scraping, prying, and flint and steel firestarting.... I like it.

Image saved :D That thing is freaking cool, you've done a great job. Great leather work, too. I'd totally buy one of those

"Which would've advanced the most at the end of a month, the boy who made his own jackknife from the ore which he had dug, and smelted himself; reading as much as would be neccessary for this, or the boy who had attended the lectures of metallurgy at an institute and in the meanwhile had received a Rodgers' penknife from his father. Which would be most likely to cut his fingers?"

That's very impressive Magnussen.
