My collection is gone, But I am still ok!

Wow....I am down to only three more knives to sell and I am done. All I have left is a big, medium and small fixed blade and a few folders. Imagine.

You know what? It feels ok. :D

If I ever feel, for even one second, that these knives own me instead of the other way around ...

Well, then you'll see another sizable sale. ;)

Yup, that' s also exactly what I would say.

As long as it stays a (expensive:D) hobby, I think it' s still fine, but when it starts to become an ''obsession'' i think it is time to rethink my situation.

Good Luck to you Justabuyer:thumbup:

I've less than a dozen knives, and that feels about right. I agree with Miro -- better it that the sharp and pointy stuff be a hobby rather than an obsession. There's a great big world out there, and a balanced life should have room for a wide range of interests.

Its not that I feel my knives "own me." I sometimes feel, being that I only have "users" that it's a bit of a waste to have a really nice knife die a long slow death in my knife display. Than again, I look at them all the time, I take pride in owning them. My kids like for me to show them to them. My three year old likes my "orange knife" the best! :D What can I say he has good taste. (its a XM) Also I like the problem of having to pick a knife to carry.

I will be keeping most ALL my knives, because I think one day they will be worth much more that the dollar cost to my children. Daddy's old beat up knives will remind them of me. That's all one can really ask for. That said I think going over 30 really nice knives would be a bit overboard, and Im not there yet! :D

555 I sent you out a small sebbie, should be there any day now. And, I packed it up in a nice heavy weight box. You might need a strider knife of some sort to get all that Quick Crete out of the way first.......:D

:D LOL It was Heavy alright, the guy had to use a Cart and was so exhausted, he passed out, right on top of the Package.:D

I think the Knife fell out in shipping, judging by the hole in the Box.

BTW this idea of a Hobby running our lives, I've only thought about this in the last months because I have about 10 knives on my want to buy list. I'm still going to make that Knife order, I'm just thinking about what I could really use at this time.
I only can remember selling one knife in my lifetime and really don't intend to sell the ones I have now. One reason is many can not be replaced, they just don't make them anymore. And when I'm gone, I expect them to go to my kids. Who else would you want to have your stuff when you're gone.

And I'm lucky to have a Wife that knows the Value in having and using good Tools (Lets keep it clean here.:D). Since most of mine are users and few queens, It's hard to feel bad about what you have and use when these are the Tools that are part of your everyday life. Just like the shovels, axes, saws, picks, etc.
For me it's just a way of life, at least till I get so old or are unable to live this way and they have me move into town, where I will not need the Tools that I need to live here.
I really do live where the Blacktop ends and beyond that.:D

Keep telling yourself that.;)

Obviously...collecting was not healthy for you.

I was a cigarette smoker for 22 years, and was diagnosed with essential hypertension in 2007....so I quit...cold turkey. I WANT to smoke, but can't because the way the hypertension manifested itself was to kick my heartbeat up to 120 bpm+ and be 170/100...so I thought that I was having a heart attack...and wound up in the emergency room 5 times.....I STILL WANT TO SMOKE...but can't.

Maybe you still want to collect...but some aspect of it does not work for your make up. Good luck walking the minimalist path.

Best Regards,

Everyday since I started the sell off I found a knife here I wanted to buy. Everyday. Sometimes more than once. I have 12,000 dollars I did not have before my sell off. Still I did not buy a knife.

This weekend the wife and I will be taking off for a adventure of some sort.
We can afford it now, because I did not spend every last extra cent on knives. This month.

I have zero Credit card debt. My Credit score went up to 820. I can possibly refinance a property loan at a lower rate as a result of that.

So yeah you maybe right. I suspect that I am not alone here either. On another forum I once watched a member post about medical bills his wife had and how he could not pay them. He took money from other members that felt sorry for him, to help pay the bills. Then a week or so later he bought a knife. AMAZING. Nobody called him on it.

Yes I miss the knives. But I don't miss the little nagging panic attacks about money. Starting next month by not having to service credit card debt and not buying new knives, I can increase our 457 plan contributions by nearly 1000 dollars a month. That will allow me to retire years sooner and more comfortably. I think I can survive OK with the handful of knives I have left.

But Yeah Steve, I think there was a lot of truth in what your wrote.

I can understand where you are coming from. After all is said and done things are things that our life really is not any better by having more things.

When the purchase of things keep us from doing other things that are more important to us, then we have a problem to solve.

Talking about how much Money that gets wrapped up in our Knife Hobby, It makes my head spin when I start to add up all the Money that I will never get back in Computers, related Hardware and Software.

That one rings a bell.

You had some of the best of the best, from queens to users.... Striders to Damascus Sebbies, and all kinds of fixed blades. So the real question is, what did you keep? :D

Still to much I think. But I can imagine using all of them. But I have to say seeing it listed like this tells me I need to get rid of a few more.

I need to think about this some more.

Oh I am certain it has happened more than once. I just know that for me living hand to mouth in order fund knife collecting is a thing of the past.

I couldn't agree with yoru philosophy more. I'll NEVER be in a financial hardspot due to knife habits. Just not gonna happen.

I commend your responsibility.

Like some have said, the friendships I have made are more important to me than any knives I own. A friend of mine, who had accumulated many guns over the years and has since pared his collection down, laid it out like this. A good centerfire semi auto pistol, .45 or 9mm. A good rimfire pistol, preferably .22. A good .22 rimfire rifle, and a good centerfire rifle (.30-06 or .308), both bolt actions or lever actions, whatever you want. A good pump 12ga. A single action wheelgun, and a D/A wheelgun. Calibers are of course, your choice. Basically, all anyone would need.

So, I look at knives like this. Everyone needs a SAK or multitool. KISS method for this one. A good folder with a three inch blade, locking/slipjoint, whatever. Everyday carry. Then, a good folder with a 3.5" blade, for working with, when you can't carry a fixed blade. A good camp knife, maybe in the 6" to 9" blade range. A good fixed blade to carry for EDC, fishing, bushcraft etc, 3.5" to 5", 5" is pushing it. Maybe a nice folder for dress carry. Like the guns and calibers, whatever steel you are comfortable with for your knives. Right now, what few I have left, are mainly S30V, O1 and A2.

Then again, limiting yourself is no fun...
That's exactly how I'm collecting, trying to find the "best in class" from several classes of knife: neck knife, multitool, medium fixed blade, large fixed blade/chopper, folder, auto, bali etc. While there are quite a few classes of knives to choose from, my collection will still end up being quite small, and all of them will likely get used as opposed to having 100 Sebenzas that just sit in a drawer.

There's still plenty to feed the collecting bug with this approach, since new knives are released every year, and of course waiting for customs can keep you busy as well. ;)

Well said, I couldnt have defined my own feelings of late any better...I am inspired to list even more of my collection today! Good Job, family first...keep some good solid performers and get out there and use them, knowing that your family is good to go. Gene

WOW..this is a great thread..thanks. Gene

Nothing wrong with simplifying.

I have a lot of knives and use most everything I keep, but I've been contemplating some sales myself. There are too many that just sit around for a year, only to be brought out for a time or two during a hunting season. Or carried on one hike and then put away for a long time. As for the Busse Ganzaaas, I haven't participated in the last couple at least. Just nothing there I had to have.

Probably won't get down to 20, but I might well get down to one of each model I really like.

On another forum I once watched a member post about medical bills his wife had and how he could not pay them. He took money from other members that felt sorry for him, to help pay the bills. Then a week or so later he bought a knife. AMAZING. Nobody called him on it.

That happened here. If we're talking about the same person, he received plenty of grief over this incident. It may have been part of what sent him into a downward posting spiral that eventually led to him being banned.

If my wife owes bills, I owe bills. If necessary, knives will be sold to pay.

I have thought about doing this many times but I just could not bring myself to do it. I really sometimes wish I would but I just enjoy them too much. I do not put myself into tight spots financially any more but I still probably spend more than I should. I use most of them but I do not use them that often. Thanks for the thread it caused some self-examination.
