My CPK hurt my feelings.

So today, my son had his first go at doing a number 2 after taking his diaper off. On his nice big soft area carpet in his room of course. I hate potty training.

Being the man that I am, I was not about the clean that shit up! I rolled up the carpet, nice and tight, then tapped it up about 6 times. I carefully marked the spot to avoid cutting with tape. I then whipped out my trusty Sebenza 25 with micarta inlay. My go to favorite of all time pocket companion.

I had just stropped it the night before, and thought I was about to make short work of the carpet. My plan was to cut the roll into lengths which I could get into black garbage bags. I would totally prefer to go to Ikea and spend $200 for a new rug rather than clean this one.

Oh I was in for a surprise. Just how little I know about just how shitty the edge retention is on the S35VN with a CRK HT. This effing thing has the edge retention of aluminum foil.

I couldn't even cut the roll once before the edge was so dull, I actually got water blisters on my hand from going at this thing.

I was so embarrassed and annoyed, I went into my office and grabbed the first D3V CPK in front of me, and made short work out of that roll. I'm not even going to say which knife it was because it was totally inappropriate for the task.

I feel like the guy at the red light in a Ferrari, who gets stomped on by the sleeper. So bad.

Please, Nathan and Lorien, I beg of you. For all that is good in the world, make a proper folder for us, I don't know how much longer I can go on knowing all that I have held true is a lie.

I'm going to cry myself to sleep now.

This makes me feel good about not having the money for a Sebenza. I wanted one but not anymore lols

..So, which CPK was it? The Light Chopper?

As I've said before, give the Sebenza a rest and try this $25 Kershaw RJ Martin design Tactical 3.5 instead: It performs like an expensive knife...

This is not the first time I hear the Sebenza or S35V have poor edge-holding... I experienced the same with S30V in a top maker...

8Cr13MoV is said to be close to 440A or Aus-8...: Plenty good enough to actually do some work...

Man, you are really into sebenzabashing and idolizing your kershaw......
Especially when never having owned a sebenza: shut up about them

Justin, I always joke with my friends that expensive and pretty knives don't need a HT. No one will ever use it hard enough to notice there is no HT. I never used my CRK on anything tougher than paper or knife package. You made me seriously think that my joke could be true for some knives after all...

it's the black coating which strengthen the steel molecules, if only CRK did black coatings, then the edges would be more stronger

He trolls the Busse forum too, ignore him..

And Becker, as well...I think most people just roll their eyes, at this point - even the amusement factor has worn pretty thin.

To bring this back to CPK content, I recently acquired a Field Knife. I haven't yet had an opportunity to use it; but I will...maybe. (By "maybe", I mean maybe it will be me - a friend of mine is planning to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, and I'm considering giving him the FK for the trip)

You guys should look into that black coating, the WalMart knife guys would back you all the way.

Life lesson:
You can pay alot and get a crappy knife
The good news is that there are some nice knives that are affordable such as the cold steel code 4

I'm working on it.

How well will it fit inside a tube sock?

So you are going to troll here too? CRK, S!, Busse, Becker, Esee. Any other top brands you would like to troll?

I am certain that's what he exactly did! Unless, your question was rhetorical in nature?!

Darn Justin, you know it doesn't take much to convince me to dump my things!

P.S. After flip flopping on a bevvy decently priced to higher $ production folders in the past few months, I'm of the opinion that a Manix 2 is a pretty great workhorse but NOT in S30V. It's time to look for a limited edition variety in one of those super steel offerings ;)

I am not saying that you should sell, I realize a Sebenza is not made for cutting carpet. But neither is a LC. That is my point.

My Spyderco Native also has S35vn steel, but it's held an edge way longer than I expected. Not sure I'd use it for cutting carpet (have a boxcutter for that) but I'd like to think the steel's still a good steel. This thread goes to show that having more than one knife is the way to go, that way you can always have a backup for when something doesn't perform like you'd want it to.

Perhaps it's a good time now to sell a couple of your CRKs and finally take the plunge into a reasonably priced Shriogorov?

P.S. As we had discussed this in private, I'm a big fan of folders with Bohler's M390 blade steel. If I could bring myself to stomach commensurately priced Chinese made production knives (after all, Apple products which are my favorites in the tech world are also manufactured in Chinese plants) with all the goodies, I would seriously consider a Reate CF for $400 with a 60-62 HRC as opposed to a $1500+ Shirogorov which is totally out of my comfort zone for a folder! That said, It doesn't mean that I'd be rushing to sell the TNK Sebenza 25, but the Sebenza for all its magnificence and robust structural presentation does have a somewhat disappointingly sub par blade performance right out of its box.

Talking about expensive folders, I never bought into crk, but I have a hinderer and a strider both in s35vn. Last year I broke down and skinned out more than half a cow elk with my strider, I would say the heat treat is spot on, it still cut reasonably well after. That hide is pretty dam close to carpet. I was impressed.
