My dog got attacked (slightly gory)

I know this is a little of topic but I figured I would share what I did last night.

I went for a run last night with my dog and when I was just about to wrap it up I passed a woman with her two young kids (8-10 years old) walking their chihuahua and mastiff. The mastiff slipped out of his collar (not a choke chain) and bolted towards us. I had already passed them so I didn't know what was happening until I was pushed aside by the mastiff and my dog was on his back defending himself. The next thing I knew was that my dog was yelping and blood was covering the concrete. My reaction was to dive onto the mastiff and unlatch him from my pup. Seems that I cut up myself on the road but I ended up with the mastiff throat in my hands and my knee on its chest. Needless to say I was pissed that this woman had a dog she couldn't control using ignorance as an excuse. Luckily I wasn't bit because I carry a nice spyderco pacific salt when running.

Summary: My dog was attacked and I am pissed. Yalls thoughts?

A few pics, nothing bad but I spoil my dog and I take an attack on him to be an attack on me.

balls man, that's a major bummer...hope the pup's feeling alright...

what did the lady say? you mentioned she was using ignorance as an excuse?

also curious to know where the situation went from you holding the mastif down...did the lady come over and recollar the dog, did it behave badly after that at all? i hope that she at least apologized...

Glad you and your dog is mostly ok. I love dogs, but can't stand owners who can't handle their own. :thumbdn:

Holy crap man, what a horror show. Glad there were only minor injuries. I think you showed great restraint. I feel the same way about my pooch and would have been tempted to take that beast out too. Really, WTF is that woman thinking

its good to know thatyou and the dog are ok...you probably handled the situation better than I would've...an attack on my dog is the same as an attack on my child...don't try it...some may thinks it's extreme, but that's how i see it

Sorry to hear this. Your dog is real nice. I hope he is ok. Mastiffs don't like other dogs guess. The owner should have it under complete control, it is a deadly weapon. Glade you didn't get hurt or have to hurt the mastiff.

Sorry to hear that. Im glad you had enough sense to take charge and that you and your dog ended up alright. That women should not be allowed to own a dog if she can't control it and take responsbility for its actions.

Oh dude that sucks, I feel you showed great restraint.

I hope your dog has a speedy recovery.

Man that really sucks! I am glad pup is ok! and you showed great restraint i carry my chive and monochrome everyday everywhere i would not have hesitated. Anyway I hope it does not happen again

Terrible experience, unforgiveable irresponsibility. She should not be allowed to keep a do she can't handle. My experience around mastiffs has been they tend to be placid. And she had a small dog, too. I don't know what got into it, but I bet this is not the first time.

Anyway, I hope your pup is OK. I'm sure he appreciated you helping out! :)

Man I'm really sorry bro, I hate to hear of any animals getting injured.
IMO people should not have dogs like that if they can't control them, when I lived in the UK there used to be a little kid aged about 6-8 who used to walk a huge Akita, damn thing used to pull him all over the place so if it ever attacked someone there is no way he coulda stopped it !!!!

Give your dog a big hug from me !!!!

I'm glad your dog is going to be OK.

I love dogs, but still I think I would have done everything I could to kill the Mastiff. When I walk my dog, I've always got at least one knife, and pepper spray.

And I agree; that woman was totally irresponsible. I have a medium sized lab mix, and I use a harness so that she can't back out of it. Her collar just holds tags...no more, no less.

Thanks all for the kind words. I know I am being a pansy about the situation but it just got a little under my skin. It has really made me think about this situation was repeated with my girlfriend instead of me or with her dog (its a little ankle biter). I don't think my girlfriend could have done anything, the mastiff was in the ballpark of 180 lbs.

As to the woman, during the scuffle she just screamed and kept repeating "oh my god" but no real action. My dog's leash is wrapped around my arm while I run so he couldn't get real far. While I pinned him, the mastiff growled and fought quite a bit but eventually it calmed down and the woman walked over and grabbed it. She used the excuse of the little kids must have loosend the collar and that she usually walks the dog alone. When I suggested that she use a choke chain she responded by saying that she never needed one. The kicker is that she is my neighbor. I moved to a new place a couple of months ago so I haven't met everyone yet. After dropping my dog off with my roomate I followed her to her house to record all her contact info and to see the dogs shot record to make sure it is current on its shots. All is well so I am not too worried. I haven't contacted any authorities and I doubt I will. I plan to speak to a few of my other neighbors to see if the dog has a history and if it does then I will contact somebody but if this is an isolated incident then I guess I will leave it alone.

My dog, Zeke, is fine now. When it happened he was a little freaked but soon calmed down and I also cleaned his cuts with some hydrogen peroxide. He followed me into every room and licked me every chance he got, it was a little annoying as he matted down all my leg hair with doggy drool. He is stil a little reserved but was all excited to greet me this afternoon.

From now on when I go running I will keep an eye out for stuff and not be lost in my own thoughts but I am not looking forward to this because running/biking is usually the time I use to collect my thoughts and relax.

dogs can be trained though...i mean unless it has like rabies, they can be trained...problem is though that most people really don't care...my little dog used to always try to pick fights when i walked it...i taught it to not even think about a fight and now it doesnt really even acknowledge the other dog thats barking away..vicious dogs are a sad thing...that's not how they come into the world

IME, it seems like this kind of attack happens more frequently now then in the past. My dog has been attacked twice in the last 3 months while I've been taking in for a walk. Both times (separate incidences, different dogs attacking) the dogs bolted out of their houses and attacked my dog while I was walking him on the sidewalk on a leash. Luckily my dog wasn't hurt either time. Both times the owners were very apologetic.

It's enough to make me think about carrying a 4 cell maglite in case the attacking dog's owner isn't around to help control their animal.

man that really sucks, I worry about stuff like this walking my rottie. she wouldn't hurt anyone, aside from defending us. But guaranteed it would be turned on us because of her breed.

First off i want to say im sorry that your dog got hurt but it looks that he would do fine. I dont know the lady and anything about her dog. As someone that grow up with dogs. I try and not blame the dog for everything sometimes a thing gets into there head and they want to act on it. We like it or not but even the most docile dog out there can still attack for no other reason but because the other dog didnt smell right. Its just how dogs are. I think you acted properly to defend your dog and not cuting the other dog. They are part of our family and just like KIDS they get into fights.. Im sure we all got into fights as kids or atlist i know i did and some of them were cause i started them. There is a diffrence between a dog fight and a dog that is out of control. If no one has any complaints about the other dog i would ask her to pay for any bills which im sure she would. I realy think you done everything right. I bet she would watch her pup more now so it wont happen again..Dogs do what dogs do, After all they want to be wolfs deep down inside.

Sasha

I'd get that stitched and make her pay. She'll think about controlling her dog then.

Sorry to hear it.

Hope your pup is feeling better.
