My Endura broke

:( I got my Endura out of the knife drawer yesterday, haven't carried it in a while because I have been buying lots of new stuff lately. Flicked it open because I was going to touch up the edge and it felt really loose. I pushed in the lock and it had less than half the normal resistance. Took it apart and found what you see in the picture. I think it actually became worse when I took it apart as there was nothing holding it in place. As you can see, it is the channel for the spring located on the back spacer. This is most definitely NOT a complaint about quality or anything like that, I am a huge Spyderco fan. This knife has been well used and nothing lasts forever. What I would like to know though, is if Spyderco will sell me a new backspacer. I know I can just get a new Endura pretty inexpensively, but this one was a gift and has sentimental value to me. I emailed them last night and I am sure they will get back to me next week, but has anyone had a similar situation where they had to buy a part? And while I am at it, will they sell you any of the different FRN scales? Thanks.

Wow, what were you using the knife for?

I can't say I've had a similar situation, but I'm sure Spyderco will take care of you. However, you'll most likely have to send it in.

I didn't realize the backspacer was in the spare parts kit. That's vaguely disturbing, but I'm glad to see Spyderco is on top of it.

I take it the G10 Endura is much stronger ?

+1

Though I really want to know how that happened.
Several possibilities. One or both of the two pins molded into tthe backspacer may have broken off. The screws holding backspacer may have loosened enough to allow the handle slabs to spread apart and allow said pins to slip out of their holes in the steel liners. The knife was taken apart and the pins damaged in the process, making it easier for them to pop out of their holes or the knife was improperly reassembled, with the pins mashed between the liners, rather than seated in their holes.

Is it my imagination or does that backspacer look pretty chewed up besides having the crack in the arm ?

Edit: Nevermind, once it broke, the blade's edge probably hit it.

Is that spring in the right way ?
Oops, nope, looks to be bass ackwards. Short leg should be to the front. That definitely could be a factor.

Yup, that's what I thought.

I'm willing to bet that's pretty much the problem right there.

That part of the backspacer with the plastic pins is quite weak and flexible. I was struggling with mine for a while too during reassembling it...

The spring wasn't in that way before, I was just pushing the part that was broken up so it could be seen. And yes, it does look pretty chewed up. It made a loud pop noise when I disassembled it, I believe I made it worse, damaging the pin that goes in the liners, like I said in the first post. For most of its life the knife has been used for regular stuff, nothing too dramatic, it was just my only knife for a pretty good long time. This summer though, it has seen heavy use gardening. I most definitely don't blame the knife, nor do I expect it to be covered by warranty, I just wanted to get a new back spacer.
And thanks for pointing out the repair kits, I can't believe I never noticed those before.:o

For less than the cost of the repair kit you can just send it to Spyderco for repair. I can't imagine they would turn you down.

I'm pretty sure the cost of repair is more than the replacement parts. You have to pay shipping, $5, and an additional $20 for the actual repair.

The first thing that came to my mind was that somebody along the way dis- and reassembled the knife improperly. These Enduras/Delicas are tricky to put back together (been there, done that), the little pins have to fit into the metal liners perfectly, or something like in the pic is very likely to happen.

Was this knife bought used or do you know if the knife was taken apart sometime?

This was actually purchased at a local gun show as a gift from my mom. It was pretty cheap and looked to be slightly used. In retrospect I myself have loosened the screws to re-grease the pivot before so this is more than likely my own doing. Spyderco QC is DEFINITELY NOT to blame, I don't think anyone should worry about their Endura's. I didn't start this thread to complain or anything, only to find out about a new back spacer. Spyderco is my favorite knife company and I am about to purchasea a new FRN ZDP-189 Stretch.:D

You don't have to pay anything until they let you know. If they decide it's abuse (I doubt it) then they'll charge you. Return shipping is free unless it is a non-warranty issue.

Wouldn't you think that Spyderco would consider this not to be covered by warranty? It's clear that the pieces were not placed together correctly.
