My first $300 folder

As promised, I am surprised. Touche, sir.

Hahaha! I am glad alot of people on here have a good sense of humor, including you!

Give us an update when you can KK. Pics and your review of if you like it or not. Will be waithing to hear.

I'm gonna sound like someone's father and say don't spend all you have saved on a knife. If you are a knifenut, you will find that you will spent the money and you will still want something else. Get a nice ZT, Spyderco, or BM frame lock and keep the rest of your money in the bank so you can start another nest egg.

I have a few nice folders but I now EDC a Svord Peasant Folder. Check them out. You might save a nice chunk of change.

DON'T GET A BIG KNIFE! Well, don't get one if you don't need it. With ZT and MT, even a small knife looks too tactical and dangerous for the sheeple, and that's when an adult has it. I would buy a nice Benchmade or Spydie with a 3" blade and save some cash, because once you become a knife knut, you can't stop buying :).

I can see why you like the Whaleshark it's a nice knife and you only get to be a kid once so why not.

I really think you should try to handle a few knives before you really commit to a purchase. You can of course return the knife if you don't like it but if you do your "homework" first, it will save you the hassle. Best of luck in your search and be sure to post up whatever you get!

I'm going to agree with what has been said by others... if you don't already KNOW what you want in a knife, you should not be spending $300 on one

You do not select your knife based on the price. You select the knife, THEN determine what you must pay.

Many of the suggestions made are great. I wouldn't own a Microtech if they were giving them away, but that's a matter of not liking the companies "ethics". Extrema ratio makes a quality knife, but they are insanely overbuilt, so unless you plan to pry your way out of a bunker, not what i'd choose.

ZT, Zermeno, CRK, there are great knives in your price range, but if you don't already know what you want specifically, you might find that you can get exactly the knife you want for only 150, or you might find that you buy a $300 knife, then realize that the one that would have been perfect for your is 375 and you should have waited.

In short, you're doing it backward

I've had the Microtech Whaleshark kinda as my want to get "grail knife" for a while, I am set on buying it now, sure while $300 dollars is a lot to spend on a knife for 15 I am confident with my purchase, I began collecting at around 9 years old and have handled many other knives, and I know I REALLY REALLY want this knife but by posting this thread I also want to get the ZT, also, I will indeed keep everyone posted on BF!

Before you buy a Microtech, go over to the ZT/Kershaw forum and ask what they think about the ethics of MT. I think you'll get an interesting bit of info.

perhaps ask about the Microtech Matrix... that's the reason i will never buy from MT again. I value a companies ethics as much as their products

Dont start a Microtech thread in the Kershaw/ZT forum since I dont think itd be appreciated. However, definitely search the forum about the Matrix and how it 'relates' to Kershaw. It may or may not sway your opinion on getting one. Personally, I wont buy another Microtech but ethics aside, I still think there are better knives.for the money. ZT is an excellent choice as many have said but if I were in your position, I'd save a bit for a small Sebenza.

I am completely aware of the whole Microtech Kershaw/ZT thing, I know Microtech copied designs and blah blah blah, but all I can say is that you can't argue with a well built product. Which from reviews on the Whaleshark looks good, "I hate Microtech for many reasons, but I love their knives." As one person said on one of the unboxings of this knife on YouTube

Yep, it's the same reason i don't buy chinese knockoffs, pirated DVDs, or stolen tvs and jewelry. I don't support people who steal.

If that doesn't matter to you, then yes, they make a great knife.

Not to derail this or defend Microtech but there is some conjecture that the matrix has "borrowed" some of it's design from a russian knife maker. There are 2 sides to every story.

Exactly my point, they suck, but they have good blades. Thats just the way I roll I guess but who knows, maybe in the future I'll think differently.

You can argue with it well built or not the sooner you learn about ethics the better. Honestly I hadn't followed the ZT Microtech deal after looking into it there is no way I'd buy from Microtech. I retract telling you to buy it look elsewhere for a company more deserving of your cash

Marfione's lack of integrity goes waaaaay beyond the 0777 / Faketrix fiasco. Waaaaaaaaaay beyond, but we'll leave that stuff out of it.

Let's talk about the fact that if your knife has to get serviced under warranty for any reason that you may have a better chance of getting clear pictures of Bigfoot before your issue is resolved through customer service and their warranty department. If you ever do have to send it in then I really hope that you don't want to carry the knife too often because between waiting to send it in and then waiting for it to return you may be able to buy a ZT0550 and a ZT0560 in that time.

the entire story has been explained quite completely. There is no debate other than spin put out as damage control

The design was STOLEN. There is no arguing otherwise. There is no "russian designer" from whom the design was "borrowed"... excluding a very few aesthetic details, the knives are virtually identical.

Feel free to do a google search. There are literally dozens of threads on various fora where this issue is discussed. It was one of the bigger examples of unethical behavior in the knife industry in recent years.

so again, if you don't care about ethics, microtech makes a good knife.

As I said I'm not defending MT. They obviously copied the Matrix but ZT has been accused of politely put borrowing the locking mechanism from a Russian designer. Haven't you wondered why kai industries hasn't sued MT. I'm just saying if you look at the whole story and not just what the ZT fans or Thomas says there is more to this story. MT was completely wrong in what they did but there is some compelling evidence if you do a google search and look at all the facts. KAI seems to have some dirty hands as well.
