My first $300 folder

KreamKaike sorry to go off topic on you. This is your thread not a place to debate the whole Matrix fiasco. Enjoy your new knife. The whaleshark looks like a fine knife. If it's not for you it should hold a decent resale value at least.

Wow. I feel old. At fifteen I spent that much on a guitar. I still haven't spent over $150 buck for a knife. Do your thing, but $300 is a lot of knife.

The Whaleshark is a nice knife. And I've wanted one, but I happen to just absolutely love my ZT 0560.
Either way I think you'll get a great knife.
But if you go Microtech, you're not going to get good Customer Service. ZT's CS is the best around.

Tony beat me to it but even if you decide to purchase their knives, if you ever have any sort of issue, you are essentially screwed. I was talking with a dealer recently who said even for THEM, its difficult dealing with MT. The warranty should be taken into serious consideration when making a high-end purchase. Knives in that range should last a lifetime and there's always a possibility something could go wrong down the line.

This is a very personal decision. What is the perfect knife for one may be totally wrong for another. We get the same type of threads on the gun forums. Also never ask " what is the best knife" . There are no correct answers to a question like that, all you will get is opinions. You need to take some time and handle as many knives as you can and determine what is right for you. Just like guns, my EDC has changed so many times, not to mention that box of holsters that I have bought and didn't care for. In my opinion you are passing on a great knife from ZT. I have known about them ever since they came out and have wanted to purchase one. I was at SMKW last week and handled at least 100 knives in four hours, I do it every time I am in the area. I fell in love with the ZT 0200ST and placed an order last night for one. If you are close to SMKW you need to ask mom and dad to go on a trip to Pigeon Forge TN, LOL!!!!

I'm not so sure you can get a mini seb for 300$, theres not that much of a price difference between the small and the big if i remember correctly.
i'd go for the Spyderco military for an EDC.

Well the best thing you can do if research all your options (which you are clearly doing with this thread), but also use other sites (not to buy from them but for all the pictures) also check the exchange here often so you can get a really good sense of the prices. Also it depends on what you are really going to use it for, as a microtech and a sebenza are generally very different. If you want something collectable but can still be used without losing all of its value buy a sebenza, it will last, looks great, and of course has all the performance to back it up.

Although their are plenty of great knives in the $300 price range, but I know if you get a sebenza you will be impressed, or atleast should be impressed.

I'd definitely recommend Seb/Umnum/Mnandi. This are the knives that you'll always love. They are special. And it's classic. I guarantee you that's the best present.
Also I suggest you a Shirogorov knife. It's Russian knife maker. Google it. I compare this knives to Seb. They are beautiful and have a character. They have a lot options of steel/handle material so you'll find what you like. Highly recommend.
Also I like benchmade Shoki 480-1. CF, Ti, M390. All the best materials in one package. Also cheaper.

Don't recommend you MT as a birthday present. It's not special enough in my opinion. And WAY overpriced.

BTW I have a birthday today. I bought myself ZT 0350TS. My first ZT.

Until he realizes why you don't pick a price before you pick an item, its going to be hard to give advice.

Put your $300 in the bank and go talk to girls. They don't care about your knife or how much it cost.

I swear I just gave you the best free advice you will ever get.

Microtech Socom Elite with aluminum handles and grip tape for around $240ish

Or for $330 ($30 more of your limit) , and full g-10 handles get the Microtech Socom Delta

Hi everyone, I just turned 15 and got birthday money along with the money I've saved, I wan't to know what a really good folder is for around $300 (I do have parents permission), I have been looking at several Microtechs, and maybe the small Sebenza, but would like other suggestions! Thanks!

I'd get a ParaMilitary 2 and keep the rest of the cash. It's all the knife you need, especially at 15. If you have your heart set on blowing it all, get a Leatherman of your choice and then a fixed blade with whatever you have left over. ESEE makes great fixed blades at a reasonable price. Different jobs require different tools.

I hope you enjoy your new knife, tell us about it when you get it. For my first edc, and I'm 16, I got the spydeco paramilitary 2. I had enough money at disposal to drop it on a large sebenza; however, I didn't really need such a expensive knife and there was better things I could buy. Not that my parents would actually let me spend that much money on a knife :grumpy: As many people have told you already, the paramilitary 2 is a great knife. In my opinion, you should check out a knife then determine your budget rather than having a fixed budget and then finding a knife at that value. Anyhow that just my 2cents.

Back in 2011 fall this was my first budget collection to test out most type of steels when I had less than $300 bux to see what type of knife was right for me. Then after a few months of use and handling knives, I sold my collection and ended up with ti frame lock stubby folders.

You're still 15 yrs old and your hands will grow big or stay the same size. It would be a shame if you get your knife confiscated by a teacher so don't spend all your $300 bux on one knife. I already know this is a old thread but I'm satisfied where my type in knives have got me now. Good luck on your first purchase kiddo.
