My first and second attempt at a sharp object

They are both great but I really like the second one. The handle scales are nicely complimented by the domed pins. Well done

Thank you! Lots of firsts for me in this process. The domed pins was one of the things I was wanting to try. The scales came from some elk drops I found when I lived in Albuquerque New Mexico. Hesparus, I see you live there. I sure do miss the food from that area. Green chili mmmmmmmmm

Those are a million times better than my first few. Those are really good for their first time, well any time in general. How did you dome the pins, i like that kind of look :)

Very nice job. My first few would have made Ray Charles flinch... I particularly like the second one. More than just looks, it has good belly and a short handle. I like field knives like that. Make working the rib cage and such easier.
Is that a flat or hollow grind? The finish may be playing tricks on me but looks hollow? I do like the finish though... Well done.

I left them a bit proud and pinned them with a concave punch and then polished with several different wheels on a foredom hand piece
Very nice. What do you have for tools?
In the background I have a heat treating oven, sandblaster, rockwell tester and my compressor

This one, my old mill is just out of frame. My wife says I have spent thousands on tools to save hundreds fixing things.

It's a flat grind, but I am wanting to try a hollow grind once I get this part down a little better.
I was trying to make exactly what you were describing. A skinning knife that I could also work in the chest cavity with.

Awesome work. Could I ask what stone that is?

The stone is a Norton india combination oil stone. It's the first stone my father gave me about 30 years ago (lots of sentimental value) I'm not sure what they cost now probably not much

You bought all of that equipment this early in the game?

What a way to start!

LOL Most of what I have bought was over many years. I would be doing something and need whatever widget so, if i could afford it i would go get it. When I built the grinder I had no intention of making knives. I was researching the best 2x72 for the money and came across this site. The more I read the more I realized that I already had most of the tools necessary to give this knife making thing a shot. I am really glad I did now, making a knife fits well into my attention span.

Those two knives look really good. Your shop is setup perfectly. I got to get me one of those rockwell testers.

Thanks for all of the positive comments!
Here are some better pics of the shop/Garage without the big grinder in the middle of the picture

Awesome shop. I'm trying to get my shop re-setup right now. It's been out of comission for the last 2 years while I was restoring a car. I'm getting my first metal working lathe and a mill soon , so need the space... But half my garage is occupied by the previouisly mentioned car, so it's tough !

I think those two knives are a fantastic example of how much of the roughness and 'shoddyness' in early knives can be skipped past by investing in good tools to begin with =)

Sure look one heck of a lot better than my first knives !
