My First Attempt at a Bushcraft Sheath for my Aurora.

I used 7-8 ounce leather, a one inch D-Ring, a Chicago Screw, 4 ounce waxed string, Ox Blood dye (too many coats to count) and some finishing wax for this sheath.

I learned a LOT by making this sheath and only made one major mistake (I sewed the belt thong before I dyed the leather) but I think it turned out well. Well, that is not entirely true - I cut the leather out on the wrong side of my first attempt - so I need to make a Lefty sheath with that! (Sheesh - lefties who need a nice sheath... um... duh... let me know! :foot: :o )

I did not have rivets or tubes large enough for the leather so I will put three of those in (each corner on the bottom at the welt at the opening) when I get those supplies.

As you can see - I used a Chicago Screw on the Dangler so that I can remove it and simply use the sheath in a belt as I see fit. I did this with my Kosters - and love the versitility. I want to thank Koyote Girl for giving me advice - I hope I did her proud!

Please tell me what you think and give advice as you see fit:

My next sheath will likely be with a firesteel loop - but as that was a little more complicated - I held off.

Just beautiful. Congrats on a really nice job and well thought out, too. You were way smart to build your normal belt loop into the design.

I have come to dislike the dangler sheaths. While I appreciate their obvious positive attribute of moving freely and out of the way, I have found that it takes two hands to draw the knife - which I really dislike. Curious to hear the thoughts of others on this...

This is why I gave the option for both. When I have a pack on - a dangler is the only good option. Also it allows the knife to slide by things and not hang up. When I get to camp - I can change it if needed.

Thats awesome for a first sheath! That would be awesome if it were your 20th sheath!

TF,

That is beautiful! Wow! Great job.

I'm about ready to try, myself. What are the special tools you needed to do that very nice work? I looked at some kits, Tandy stuff, but don't know if that is the best way to go about getting started.

Stay sharp,

Really clean work! I really like the color too!

I've got myself a section of hide and I've yet to make my first sheath. Your work inspires me to get out the knives and needle and get to work.

I got all my stuff at Tandy - I had no problems with it:

1) Adjustable Stitch Gouge.
2) Non Adjustable Stitch Gouge.
3) #4 Waxed thread.
4) A Diamond Awl.
5) Ox Blood Dye.
6) A one inch D-Ring
7) Some Leather Glue (contact cement).
8) A Chicago Screw.
9) A Overstitcher Kit (I used the smallest wheel - a #4 kit - if I were to do it again - I would use a #5).
10) A bone Folder
11) Some finishing liquid.
12) Neats foot.
13) Two books - The art of making leather cases AND the Art of leather stitching - both by Al Stohlman.
14) Some rivets or tubes and the tools to set them.
15) A sharp knife to cut the leather (or shears or a wheel).
16) Some 0 sized Needles.
17) A #2 or #3 Edging tool.
18) (A french Edge tool and a regular edging tool would be good).

All of this and some leather should do you. I spent about 150 dollars on the whole mess - but could make about 7 of these with the leather - and the tools are lifetime things.

Great Job! Your sewing looks almost like a machine did it?? Only other thing I suggest is a couple ring holes to wrap some parcord.
Looks great my friend!

WOW! Fantastic looking sheath! Is that really your first?

You're hiding the other 30 you messed up on aren't you? :D

Hey tf, your head is too friggin' big already, but, you did an excellent job! Let me repeat that, an excellent job!

Everything I've seen you make has turned out fantastic. Too bad personality isn't commensurate with manual skills.

JK bro, about the personality, that is. :D
