My first attempt at a sword

After a few folks said my last fighter looked like a sword I thought what the heck. I've made several large knives but nothing with a blade longer than 18". I've been told that over 18" you have yourself a sword. Right now I've got a blade that is 19 1/2". I'll call it a short sword. I would have gone longer but there's a limit. I'm hoping I can fit this blade at a diagonal and have a half inch to spare and be able to close the oven door. This blade was forged out of Bruno's Best 1 1/2 X 1/4 1084. 17 1/2" was what the blade started out at.

I'm positive it'll be fantastic as everything you do it!!!! Looking forward to seeing it as it progresses!!!

Uh-Oh - we've unleashed a monster! Okay Ray, keep us posted on this. I've often wondered whether I could get away with heating a blade diagonally in my oven; now I guess I know. How are you planning to support it in there? Can't wait to see what happens next... :D

I temper katana in my oven. I put the blade diagonally ,from top to opposite bottom, and have the tang stick out the door seal. After one hour I turn it around. I give the blade two or three of these tempers. Shorter swords will fit in the oven diagonally and the door can close.

Nice knife/sword ,Ray.

Man, I can't wait to see what you do with the handle Raymond.

Oh Ray, you crazy guy!:D
You make some of us so happy:)

Dave, It shouldn't be a problem supporting the blade in the oven. I've got a couple pieces of pipe that have been cut in half length wise with notches cut in them that will keep the blade standing straight up on edge. I'm pretty sure it will fit in the oven with the door closed all the way. My main problem is my back. I'm not even sure I can make it to the shop today. I'll see what happens.

Take care your yourself first, for sure Ray. Don't let us slavering hungry fans push you to do anything you shouldn't do - after all, your long-term happiness is to all our benefit! ;) I'm really looking forward to what you do with this. Selfishly, I hope you don't sell it before the Wolverine show, so I can play with it. :D

Ok so, when I read first attempt I think good, finally we'll see something a little less than amazing from Raymond. Click....ah crap...not this time. Short of a teal/seafoam colored handle it'll be just another ungodly beautiful blade.

;)

Hope your back gets better.

LOL great post Pad! :D

ray, I'm so sorry your back is in bad shape, you're in my prayers.

Bro----I cannot tell you how happy I am to watch this thread unfold!!!

I hope this one looks like that Long Range Fighter you posted recently... Take care buddy.

My wife found my back brace a few hours after my last post. I got the big blade annealed Sunday. Got it ground this afternoon and now its cooling off. I plan to get it heat treated tonight or at least a good start. Hopefully after I harden it it will be as straight as it is now. I'll find out within the next hour. Here's a picture of the blade after I got it ground and a picture of it cooling off while I was normalizing it.

Looking good ray. One reason I've never done a sword, or bowie over 12" is worying about how I'll temper it.

Hope your back gets to feeling better.
