Here is a sketch of my first blade attempt. It will be made from 1095 using the stock removal method. I plan to heat treat and temper myself. I do plan on using square pins. I have not seen this done before, but if you all have please respond with a link to a photo. Any critique on this would be welcome! Thanks for looking.

Interesting looking knife. I have no idea how you will drill square holes, please keep us posted.

Kinda' ulu-esque. I like it!

That sharp angle between the handle and the blade is going to eat at your finger though, got to do something there. And maybe only two pins...???

-Peter

Make the handle to blade transition rounded all the way down to the heel, and put a tiny round end at the heel of the blade ( or that sharp end will bite you).

For the pins, use mosaic rivets with a square center. All the knife supply houses sell mosaic pins.

What Peter & Stacy said. You want a round in there at the Rocasso to handle.

ARe you going to flat or hollow grind this knife?

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I plan on drilling the blade handle with oversize round holes to fit the square stock through and using a hollow chisel mortise tool for the scales. I might use some hidden 1/8" pins to keep alignment.

I will adjust my sketch later tonight to reflect your suggestions and repost.

I appreciate the help. As I get older I find it is much more productive to listen to people who have "been there done that" so to speak.

No need for hidden pins if the square pins go through both sides. The tang holes can be larger round holes. The epoxy will fill all gaps and lock everything solid.

To make the pin holes align right, I would suggest making the square holes through the block of wood, and then cutting the block into scales.

Here is the updated sketch from the feedback. It looks better to me and should be more comfortable to hold.

Thanks for the input guys!

I'm being a little cheeky here, but for the record, you could always broach them square if you really wanted to. Though I do agree with Stacy's suggestion of making life easier on yourself and just using mosaic pins.

Have you mocked it up in cardboard yet and tried holding it? It's a really quick, cheap, and effective way to gauge handle shapes and see how they fit and feel in your hand.

OK, I have not mocked it up in cardboard yet.... My recycle went out today and I can't find any....

John, yes that is the bit, but it goes in a special machine (for some reason I can't copy the url for it, but it is a Grizzly Bench top Mortising Machine). I will be using actual square stock for the pins. Copper to be exact.

Looks better,
I suggest you leave the Ricasso a little wider so you can addjust the finger side for comfort since it appears hat you are making a short handled or three finger knife handle.

Mocking it up out of cardboard can help but i won't give you the scales thickness.

Carry on, you are doing well.
