My first Bowie sketch, critiques and recommendations welcome

I wouldn't go that far, but it is a horribly written article. The number of mistakes is mind numbing.

None of those knives are well designed. They are all basically toys for people who like action movies.

..... I thought it was perhaps just me. The language and grammar alone are appalling, that is before you actually scratch the surface of the subject matter. I dislike being overly critical but the information is basically gibberish, I do however find it most amusing that a bayonet makes the list as a "Bowie Knife" but lets not let that get in the way of the in depth analysis. The Beckers are good quality blades but the writers assessments of them are interesting. Yes Dear, a knife will rust if you don't care for it. And let us not touch on the definition of "Bowie Knife". Geeeze...I need a drink.

I was harsh, but none of those knives are remotely close to what the op is planning to build. A couple of them are campers/hunters, loosely defined. I was overly harsh as this "review" is basically spam.

That is close Warren. I actually based this on these beautiful, slender hog hunting knives. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1403444-Hog-knives-finished

I wondered if that was it, but the handle is more like Eric's. In that case, take the peak out of the center of the edge, and blend the curve front to back. You will have a slight taper from the heel to the tip, with no section of the knife and spine parallel. The pointy tip makes perfect sense now.

Ok I redrew the front lug, the handle and butt, and some curves of the blade.

Do you guys think my ricasso is too short?
I didn't think so at first, but now for some reason it seems small.

I don't think the ricasso is too short. Guys like Nick have made the short ricasso very cool. If you or the eventual recipient of the knife is in the habit of wrapping a finger in front of the guard I would keep that in mind when sizing the ricasso. You might want to make the ricasso a bit taller from choil to spine though. This will allow for a slightly longer shoulder surface against which to seat the guard, which in turn will allow you to leave a bit more meat at the front of the handle while still matching the lines of the ricasso top and bottom, particularly at the bottom. Does that make sense?

Hmmm, sorry for my ignorance, but I'm not following.
Should I make it wider from the blade side of the ricasso to the spine where it meets the guard?

I liked the original sketch. It's your knife...make the one you like. You are never going to please everyone anyway. If they are all going to look the same we might as well use patterns and model numbers. Just my opinion. Larry

Josh,

I hope you understand. Larry is right. You are the builder. Make it the way YOU want. I'm not trying to change your design. I'm just thinking out loud and looking at the kinds of tweaks I might make if I were finessing a design I was working on. This is what I meant. In this modified version of your sketch you can see where the bottom edge of the ricasso is just slightly lower. This gives a tiny bit more shoulder area where it meets the tang and allows you to have slightly thicker handle material where it meets the guard. Again, it's just something to consider. You do it the way you want.

Agreed. Your original sketch looks good.

Thanks guys, I'm not trying to do a paint by numbers Bowie, I'm just not trying to re-invent the wheel. If there are obvious flaws I'd rather address them in the planning stage. I like the way this Bowie is evolving and I appreciate the encouragement either way.

That's it, I'm making 2. One for me, one for my brother :) My original sketch will be mine lol.
You guys rock, thanks again!
