My First Bushcrafter?

Form and function. I gotta get a bushie or Kep. Great looking knife.

I, too, like the larger handle specs. What a user.

Love the grind. Handle looks a bit too beefy and I'd prefer more of a drop on the point, but I love the point of that knife.

Looks like a great knife. I'm not much of a bushcrafter, but I really like this style of knife. Were I ordering, I'd opt for a 4.5" long handle and a true straight back, but I have an unhealthy love for straight-back knives. Another vote for the thick scales here, too.

very nice, functional blade. I personally like a larger knife for 'bushcraft' chores, but thats a honey.

oh man.. that thing looks nice Ray... definitely your style, while still maintaining the general bushcrafter look...

Too beefy, pfffttt....a handle can never be too beefy !:D

Very nice. 3/8" scales work fine...but if the handle is tall it can feel bulky.

Ray,

I like it - however, if you were to do it again, plan a full convex.

I think you have a winner.

TF

I'll do it again. This was a fun weekend project. I did it because I felt like it. It was not an order. Full convex would be nice too. Does full convex mean no secondary edge bevel or just grind all the way to the spine like a full flat grind?

I guess most of you guys really do like the fatter handles. I don't personally like the handle to be thick but I'm not making these knives for myself. I'm making them for you guys.:)

Hey Ray,

I REALLY like that knife  That grind is all around versatile I think and it looks like it worked out very good for you.

As far as the handle, I have two thoughts for you.

Thinner handles are nice for a general purpose knife. They make the knife nice and portable and very easy to handle. I like that about your knives in general.

If you are doing occasional cutting or for shorter periods of time, I think the handle thickness is less critical.

If you are truly going to do a "bushcraft" project, in all likelyhood you could be cutting for a significant amount of time. In that case, a larger handle is really much more comfortable, IMO. However, it does take a bit of versatility away from the knife. Kind of makes it more special purpose.

Just thinking out loud :D

To be honest, I think you should make it will both thick and thin. How's that for no help at all :p

Ray - I am with you on liking the 1/4" nowadays. When I need a thicker feel without going overboard I add liner material to the 1/4" stock. Very nice in between split the difference....for me anyways.

My "Companion" I use is 1/4" with red liners.
