My first Case...Trapper lock, Trapper or Large Stockmen

Ok, I couldn't wait. I just ordered a Northfield#73 red buffalo horn liner lock and a #54 big jack in sambar stag. Now I can't wait till they come in!!! lol

lol, I hope you enjoy them. I do not buy many factory knives anymore other than the Tony/Case collaborations and that sway back in carbon is pretty tempting, but I have been leaning a little too close for comfort to the Northfield stuff. :D.

Yeah, I had pretty much given up buying production tactical folders. A friend of mine had talked me into buying my first custom tactical folder awhile back and after that I stopped buying production other than a chinook II that I won in a pass around. Then I wound up with three custom fixed blades and now I have a Graham brothers pocket Kukri on order. Damn knives are like a disease!!!

It's weird I just kinda started looking at more traditional stuff and now I am hooked. What gets me is the quality of them compared to production tactical folders seems disproportionate. The case slipjoints I bought are extremely well made and the finish is unreal and now the gentlemen I ordered the northfields from told me that If I like case I would be very impressed with GEC's products. With the tactical folders you can still get a little slop here and there with the production stuff which is annoying for what they charge.

I can see where all this is going, I am eventually going to end up with a custom slip joint. Maybe something around 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 closed single bladed hopefully within a reasonable price range for a user not a safe queen. I don't know, does 275 to 350 sound reasonable.

Yup, and even could do a little better price wise and end up with a heck of a knife you would enjoy. We have some makers here that will do you a heck of a nice job.

Then you move on to multiblades. I feel your pain. :D. (Been feelin' it for a long while now.)

True there is, but you've got to snap 'em up quick as they seem to go very fast, lot of hungry collectors out there:D

The two Northfields came in today. The big jack is very good, no visible problems and the blades open and close with a solid feel.

However maybe it is just me but the #73 red buffalo horn scout liner lock is an absolute disappointment, it is the 12th one made of fifty and the card is actually signed so I know that someone looked it over before it left GEC. The scales on one side are just barely short of being flush with the liner, on the other side there is a crack at the bottom that is slightly rough to the touch but could be an aspect of the natural handle material. At the same time this side falls even shorter of being flush with the liner. Now here is the part that really gets me on that same side that is shorter, at the top where the scale meets the bolster there is an actual space that is probably big enough to fit a folded piece of printer paper in there I mean I can actually see the liner(probably less than 1/64 of an inch wide).

Is buffalo horn prone to problems? It's the only one I have with that handle material.

What I don't get is that someone actually took the time to number it and then sign the card. Anybody who buys knives regularly would pick up these obvious flaws immediately, I would think the maker would have never let it leave the factory in the first place. Unless of course this a natural type thing with buffalo horn, because everything else seems perfect, open and closing, no blade play, liner lock works perfect, good edge, and all the metal looks good and polished. So I am a little puzzled.

Send it back to the dealer. It sounds like the horn handles have shrunk, they grow when they get hot in hafting and shrink when they cool and the moisture content lessens....

I had sent the knife back and asked for a replacement but called them back today and said I would rather have the refund. I went to use the #54 today for first time and it was as dull as a butter knife I checked the main blade same story. I have never had any problems sharpening yet I could not get this thing to take an edge for nothing. My son has sharper blades on some chinese made junk knives that have been resharpened.

I think I'll stick with Case, both of them arrived perfect in every way and cost me about half as much.

I am not commenting on their company as a whole, just an account of my own personal experience.

I know how you feel....I've gotten a few disappointments from some very well known companies.

I will agree with you about Case, I've gotten about 6 of their knives over the last two years and find the quality to be consistently high.

The last two I got, a 6.5 bonestag jumbo stockman and a Crandall Buckhorn trapper are beautiful knives.

I was carrying the stockman during the Christmas holiday and showed it to my father, he was equally impressed. I think I'm going to pick one up for him....

I posted the "I'll take it" on that Dowell spear point in green canvas micarta.................................. YEAH BABY!!!!

So I feel better today lol.

Best pick up that Bonestag Stockman quick:eek: CASE no longer make these scales(idiots..)and they seem to be becoming difficult to find.

Yes, I know... I had a hard time finding this one. I think Shepherd Hills still has a few. Definitely one of favorite scales.

The stockman pattern is my favorite, but I have been hankering for a larger trapper pretty bad lately. Looking at the Tidioute 73 and 23 right now.

I saw my father today, and he knows that I have gotten into more traditional knives lately. He went through a display case of knives he had put together over the years of knives he has bought was given or found and came up with a small green bone case 2 blade gunstock folder. He gave it to me and said he would rather I carry it than have it sit and collect dust in the display case. Funny thing is that I don't really remember him having it until I told him what I started buying lately. He had apparently bought it in 97 because he still had the box it came in that was labeled with the date. I had planned on getting something this size for the watch pocket.

It's perfect in more ways than one! I know forums aren't your thing pop so you probably won't see this but....thanks, you're the best!

Now that you've come over from the dark side ;) let me add fuel to your fire.

Check out copperhead patterns. The most common size is 3-3/4"; perfect for carry and the rounded ends are real comfortable in the pocket.

They come in single and double blade, lockers and slippies; I have several of each and I love them all.

Of course, today I'm carrying a Case canoe so what do I know..?
