My first cord-wrapping (pic)

Here is a picture of my first traditional Japanese cord wrapping. I wish I had shaped the scales differently. This is one of the kit knives Neil and I worked together on. This is how the cord-wrapping turns out according to Scott Slobodian's instructions. On real Japanese swords the end of the knot is covered by the butt cap, but this still looks okay. Knife is approx 4-4.5" long OAL or so made from D-2. I haven't measured any of these yet. Scales are green linen Micarta with stainless pins. Cord is just some shoelace material.

Thanks to the people who helped me with this, especially to the person who photocopied and mailed the article Slobodian wrote in KI.

I don't know about soaking it. There is double-sided tape underneath the sides and you can see it peeking through the end, too, if you look really carefully. I wasn't positive I'd keep the knife like this, so I didn't soak it. I think I'll leave it as-is. It seems to be pretty durable this way, although if it was a real user it would get soaked.

Steve,
The knot at the end looks great! I do mine a bit different. That's the hardest part of the wrap as far as I'm concerned. Do you know how to tie a Turks Head knot?? They would look nice on the larger ones!
Oh Ya, that's one of those damn little ones

I got a burning sensation in my finger tips just looking at your picture of it

All in ALL nicely done!!

keep up the good work.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys! My hands were mucho cramped after the wrapping, but it was worth it. Ydduit, I used instructions that appeared several years ago in Knives Illustrated. They were photocopied and sent to me by another forumite. I would offer you a copy, but I currently misplaced them (big surprise!).

Hopefully I'll find it again. I'm not sure what year or month that article appeared. You may want to get in touch with Lynn Griffith at http://www.griffithknives.com and see if he has the issue. He is selling old knife magazines, and he very well may have that very issue. He doesn't have them all cataloged, so he might not even know he has it. I want to say it appeared in 1997, but I have no idea for sure.

The Turks head Knots are MUCH harder to explain than they are to do. I have never used one on a knife though. I spent many years on sailboats and went through two Outward Bound coarses, learning MANY knots along the way. Turks head knots are used on older wooden sailboats to ad grip and limit travel on wooden members. I will look through some old sailing books I have and try to find a diagram.

Chiro75 -

I've got KI's going back to October '92 and Blade going back to February '93. I was not able to located the wrapping article in my index of "how to" articles. But that is not to say it's not there somewhere.

If someone could let me know the issue, I could be persuaded to provide a copy.

The article is in the spring 1990 issue of KI
( I have never thrown away a kife mag) page 44.
If anybody wants the info I could scan it and email it out.

Thanks for the links, Dr. Walt! They were very helpful...anyone know what type of cord works best for the Turk's Head as applied to knives? They all seem to use the same stuff, but I can't tell if it's the same material that the handle is wrapped in or if it is something completely different.

Hagar -

I would appreciate a copy of the article also. Here's the e-mail:

Thanks!

Nice work, Chiro! I'm experimenting with Japanese-like wrap myself, will post some pictures when finished.
You mentioned the "shoelace material" - does it mean you were able to buy some length of it, uncut? If so, I would appreciate contact info for the source. Even the longest shoelaces are to short for wakizashi/katana length handles...

Thank you.
Alex.
