My first Em

I know you have kinda ruled out the "12" due to cost and I understand 100%. Still, I gotta give the 12 a good plug. It's a great knife and if you have large hands it's even better. I have to admit though, I'm a bit bias for framelocks myself :D.

FYI, Yourcornerstore.com is selling the CQC-12 for $240ish. At the time of this posting, they are NOT in stock. If $240 is too much, you could always try and pick one up second hand. Cheers.

Yeah 240 is still way too much for a single knife. My max for a single blade is about $180. Not trying to be cheap but I just can't justify spending that much for a carry knife.

I am going back to the store tonight to buy the commander. I'll see if he has anything else that strikes my fancy. But I seem to be settled. Will let u guys know. Thanks.

Here the pic of my mini commander, commander & super commander.

Dude, don't pay retail. Check the internet stores. Check 1sks.com
and new graham knives.

I'll check out online but on the bay I still see the 12 going for $280ish. The commander he is selling me is at a fair price.

Is it true straight blades are harder to come by and a tad more money??

Well I came home with the Commander. The 8 got sold anyway.

What I first noticed is that opening the blade is a bit tough. It "squeaks" a tad upon opening. Should I be loosening the pivot screw a tad??? Its not smooth as glass because its sorta tight.

Blade is super sharp. Probably the sharpest I've ever seen. Sharper than any BM out of the box that's for sure.

Also the liner lock is tough to 'de-activate' when opening it fast (using a swinging motion). Its like its pushing too far over maybe?

Ergos are top notch. Build quality upon close inspection is really impressive.

It is inscribed 2008 so its a current production model. Wave feature is cool but its not a way I'd open the blade since I've never used that mode. I've practiced opening a folder one way so I don't expect to really use the wave feature. it serves as a real nice ramp though for ergos. So that's good.

Overall impressed with the knife. But I'm unsure if I should loosen the pivot a tad to get it more moving smoothly. And the liner getting locked way over making it tough to close... not sure what that's about.

I think I might be an Emerson fan soon... That 12 and 8 are calling my name!

Take a look at my recent post on my new cqc-14
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=602263

After opening closing maybe 300 times it is now nice and smooth. I did take out the blade and clean/lube but not sure if I even needed to. It is easy to take the blade out and reinstall, so if you want to, won't hurt.

For me, it was tightening the pivot screw just a little to reduce any horizontal play.

Good luck.

For me, the liner lock is way to the left so it is easy to disengage. How far over to the right is yours?

You can loosen the pivot a bit and add some oil. The lube is probably dry.

I don't know what you mean about the lock. It's tough to unlock? Does it stick or is it just too strong for your wimpy little thumb?;)

heheheheheh, well it feels as if its stuck but then again, maybe it is my wimpy thumb!!!

so it needs a little break in. i've been opening and closing quite a bit and yeah its feeling more smooth like glass...but still squeaks a tad so maybe i'll drop a tad of oil in there...

thanks guys

The locks can be a bit sticky sometimes but that will wear in too so no worries.
If its taking ages or is really bad you can use a pencil to draw on the lock face of the blade and that will help it a little.

hmmm, but what's up with the squeaky???? it is moving smooth now after some break in but it still squeaks

The squeak will stop after a while once its all polished its self out. I had a few squeaky EKIs but taking it to
bits cleaning the contact areas and washers then lubing it back up stopped it.

Also, if you want suuuuper smooth you can get some pb washers and mirror polish
them as well as the contact areas and bingo ;)

I think I am going to get the '8' as my first, but I hope someone can answer the following: Benchmade offers a titanium handled Skirmish for around 200-, now Emerson had used both liners on his knives made of titanium and has recently done away with that, using price as the reason. How can Benchmade offer a total handle of titanium, while Emerson cannot even keep both liners in that mode? The Comrade is wicked too, and maybe the $300 tag is justified, but WHATS UP WITH THE STEEL AND TITANIUM LINERS ON THE REST?

We use Aerospace grade titanium on the spring/lock side liner. Titanium is the perfect material for that function and has all of the properties needed to perform the duties of a strong reliable locking liner system. The opposite side (non-lock side) is crafted from a 300 series stainless steel. This side of the knife functions as a handle frame stiffener and has a minimal mechanical function. The stainless steel is truly stainless. It will not rust and does not affect the overall performance, wear, or durability of the knife in any negative way

if it says that on there site they have not updated it yet, they dont use the steel liners anymore, i dont think any ever had them except a few k'bits, and the steel liner ones will probably become collector items as so few were ever made with 'em.

Nope, I don't even own one yet, thus my concern before I buy one. I have gone with Mr. Emerson's advice in the past ( getting a pair of boots he recommends) and they sucked. I am a Marine who has done a fair bit of humping through b.s.; can anyone verify both liners are Ti. or should I just get the CQC-12 framelock? I have to test these things out, no one else has and I am dubious to rely on the SEALS opinions, or lack of feedback, I would like to see some actual photos of tough knife work.

one more time, they dont use the steel on the one side of the liners any more and only a few IIRC k'bits ever had them.

the best and toughest knife to get would be a '12.

imho a '12 is as tough as any folder you would care to name, strider and custom hinderer included and the strider and hinderer are as good as it gets for a tough heavy duty knife imho.
