My first HI khukuri arrived, and already I had a little accident with it...

I have a 15 inch khukuri purchased on a market in Khatmandu by my old neighbour. It looks like a British Army Service. It feels a bit wimpy to me. I suppose the 15 and 18 inch Ang Kholas are heavier but still I feel the need to jump up one considerable size for an all round carry. I'll try the 20 incher for camping. If it feels like a drag while walking I'll just give it to my father who does a lot of farm work and fishing and rather get myself an 18 AK on a later occation (when I get rich enough to buy all the khukuris I want :D).

Thanks for advices.

Sounds like a good plan!:) Let us know how you like it!

18 Ak is nice, it's a freaking prybar hammer and axe-like chopper. Still my fave user, though the HI Falcatta is a nasty and effortless slicer (however, the falcatta falls into the sword category, so i do not use it to chop much past a few test cuttings).

I'm a pretty large-frame bipedal mammal, and 18" AK is the biggest I'll go in the Ak category. the weight jumps up about a pound with those last two inches.

If you absolutely must cut tough stuff, the GRS may be the way to go. It and the AK series designs put a lot of mass at the spine, just behind the center of percussion -- this is very evident on the GRS.

Holy cow Eik! You're going from a filet knife to a meat cleaver. No joking, when you unleash that monster on mere saplings please mind your knees/shins on the follow through of your swing.

I use all my khukuris with great care and respect, but none so much as my 18" AK. When you see how aggressively a big AK bites into wood, you'll quickly understand why. Good luck and enjoy perhaps the most awesome blade you've ever swung.

Sylvrfalcn,

The 20" AK is A LOT BIGGER than the 18" AK..:D

Ferrous Wheel, I must say that GRS looks very right to my eyes. There is something about it's shape that looks beautiful to me. Maybe I'll give the 20 inch AK to my father anyway just so that I have an excuse to buy myself a GRS. ;)

Thanks for your concern Sylvrfalcn. I've swung some long and heavy axes close to my shins some times in my earlier years. I hope those experiences provide me with enough lessons to take care. But I'll remember what you said of course.
