My first knife (design pics...questions)

K, not trying to be an ass, but rather share experience. You're in the R&D phase now, and that's basically re-inventing the wheel that dozens of makers have gone through over the years. There really isn't anything "new" in the knife world.

Logically, there is no reason for a spiky handle. If it was a good idea, you'd see it on a lot more hard-use knives. With the swell of the ring and the rear portion of the blade, you're hand is trapped fairly well. With a palm swell instead of the spikes, you have a comfortable grip that's resistant to slipping.

What the spikes give you, though, is a "cool" look. It's different and looks mean, but they weren't very popular with the buyers or they would still be offered.

You're learning, and that's good.

Yea, much better. Have you considered putting on some handle material to give it a little more girth? I ordered some neoprene from TKS and tried my hand at attaching it to a blank I had. It was easy as pie and I LOVE the way it feels and how it turned out. Even in wet or cold climates it remains grippy. All you need is a file, sandpaper, and epoxy. The stuff is super easy to work with and form, plus its only $5 for 2 scales. Here are a few pics, beginning to finished.

Just a thought.

That was something I was considering (not neoprene, but scales of some sort). Considered goign down to 1/8" thickness rather than 3/16 and doing some thin scales.

I'm still slightly redesigning the profile, but thanks for posting that - I'll draw some scales up while I'm at it too.

So it changed slightly and here's what the jet cutter is making up for me next week. I took it to a knife seminar as well and went over the design with several people who make a living off training with blades - got some good input from there as well

Trainer version on top, actual knife design on bottom.

I've got a knife maker doing the grinds/HT for me as well, though I may have an extra one made up and try my own hand at doing the bevels myself.
