This is going to sound mean.... take it as someone yelling at you about an out of control bus. You don't need to worry about a buffer right now. You need to worry about stuff like taping up blades during fit up, you need to worry about not sharpening blades during finishing, there's a lot of things you need to worry about before you worry about a buffer. The finish on your knife would be very wavy and show scratches after being buffed.
I'm terrified of buffers. My godfather has had a blade stuck in his thigh and a large blade caught him with the flat across his nose (very lucky). I had some close calls with them early on in my knife career and I'm afraid of my low powered buffer/grinder thingy. There's no way I'd run a big Baldor with 10" wheels on it.
You're going to build a forge to forge blades? Great, most of us do a hand rubbed finish on forged blades.
