my first knife MISTAKE

This is going to sound mean.... take it as someone yelling at you about an out of control bus. You don't need to worry about a buffer right now. You need to worry about stuff like taping up blades during fit up, you need to worry about not sharpening blades during finishing, there's a lot of things you need to worry about before you worry about a buffer. The finish on your knife would be very wavy and show scratches after being buffed.

I'm terrified of buffers. My godfather has had a blade stuck in his thigh and a large blade caught him with the flat across his nose (very lucky). I had some close calls with them early on in my knife career and I'm afraid of my low powered buffer/grinder thingy. There's no way I'd run a big Baldor with 10" wheels on it.

You're going to build a forge to forge blades? Great, most of us do a hand rubbed finish on forged blades.

BUFFERS...............OUCH!!!

not a beginers tool by any means, i run 10'' wheels on my home made one, but i started with a bench grinder and a 4 or 6'' buffing wheel it moved alot faster than my current buffer, but the wheel size wasn't nearly as large. im in agreement that(and i mean this as a positive) you have alot of things to worry about before you need a buffer, get your self some sand paper and a set of good files, and a vice in you dont already have these things and start over from scratch. make a good knife and leave a hand rubbed finish on it, (in many cases more desirable than a buffed finish) and then make another, and another........you get the point. then worry about mor advanced equiptment. just my opinion, i like you am still learning every day........alot of times it's from the other guys on this forum.....or through my own dumb trial and errors.

good luck
andrew

i really appreciate all the help and im glad you told me about buffers. what ya all think about a paper wheel for sharpening i see a whole saler in alberta with the8 in kit for under 40 bucks.hooks up to my grinder . Is that safer i have a kevlar glove i dont think i need it but hey i have never never cut myself bad with a knife and ive cleaned thousands of fish. i do a walleye in 2 min flat boned out lol . Now saying that ill go buy some band aids lol and i will put my info under my name. kellyw

Kelly while it's true you've never cut yourself cleaning fish you've also never stuck a sharpened piece of metal into a buffer. I don't know much about paper wheels except that from what I see you can get some scary sharp knives using them.

Hey, if you've spent time driving RR spikes in hardwood ties, then you know how to swear ;) And yes, I'm speaking from a LOT of experience there :D

A bit of advice, it would sure make it easier to understand your posts if you broke them up with capitals and punctuation.

I've got ADD and it's just about impossible for me to read your posts.... They look like one giant mass of letters. :)

Ditto: Same here.

If you hit the return key every once in a while it really helps me too.

When I read your posts, it seems to me that you never take a breath. I get lost in all the different ideas streamed together.

Ok , but if you knew me.Youd never would have said that if you knew me in person. I talk twice as fast as i type. With about 3 F s per sentence and i type 70 words per min WITHOUT CAPITALS sorry im not yelling. I will attempt better sentence structure.OMG im sounding like a fag . NO I AM NOT. kellyw
