I have always wanted to make a knife, so yesterday i grabbed an old circular saw blade and came up with this:

I carved it out with an angle grinder and i am finishing it with my belt sander. it's not as difficult as you would think to get a basic shape, but keeping everything consistent is tough! a quick question, i plan on using it for EDC and i don't have anything to use for pins. will my wood scales hold on fine with just 30 min. epoxy? the scales will be chechen, and i will drill the handle a bunch so the epoxy will have plenty to hold on to on the blade but what about the wood? kinda worried about them shearing off. also, does anyone know what kind of steel circular saw blades are? i heard somewhere that they're O1, but???

Thanks,

(hooray, pics worked first try!)

Go to the hardware store and get some brass rod for pins. You'll thank me later.

^what he said. I've had scales held on with 30 minute epoxy crack off (with holes drilled in the tang) from light use. I haven't made too many knives, but all the scales I've put on using peened brass or nickel silver rod have held fine.

You do not have to peen the rods , tubes , pins whatever you use. The point of them is to add strength to the scales.

The hard part you will find out is drilling that bad-boy so you can add your rod. Your best bet would be to use a dremel and a small grinding cone ( or similar concept ) to bore a hole thru the steel for your rod.

There are a ton of tutorials on building a fixed blade knife available online.

Welcome to Blade Forums and you come bearing eye candy. Good start! Make sure you pin those scales on as advised and do be sure to come back to this thread and let us see the finished knife okay? :D

Thanks a ton guys. i was thinking of maybe welding 2 steel scales on instead of wood for this one. good idea? bad idea? (i don't exactly have the most funding in the world, i gotta get mobile so my motorcycle is coming first)
tostig: my friend and i can drill this: if he can drill inconel and titanium I'm sure we can do this.
oh and here's some more:

maybe a bit more touching up, but it's coming out ok.

Very nice, but just make sure you drill the holes on the handles first before you make the thing sharp enough to cut you if it decides to do the helicopter.

yup :D
i learned that one the hard way drilling a piece of aluminum at school all too fast without a clamp.

i remembered that i had some aluminum rod that i found on a roofing job, so i turned it down on a lathe for pins. drilling the holes in the tang wasn't actually all that tough, just run your drill press slow and use a very sharp bit.the scales are cut out and glued on with 30 min. epoxy. i will start into the handles today, after the epoxy has some more time to cure.
