My First Knife! Sweet!

any round material can be used for pins. nails, coat hanger, solid house electrical line, just about anything will do. it will add a more finished look to your blade.

i'll get a shot of the whole thing after i finish grinding the blade. i'm not too satisfied with the kitchen knife shape. then i'll have lotsa pics :D

reground the blade. i like this profile lots more than the "kitchen knife" shape. now it's just re profiling the sides and a swedge on the clip and it's done!

Nice work! Way cooler than my first attempt! Did you grind it fully hardened or did you anneal it first?

Congratulations, there is nothing like a knife you make with your very hands!

ok... i think it might be done...
after many hours of grinding steel, countless hours at a vise with rasp in hand, i think it may finally be done... either way it's ready to go on my belt!

I tried to sharpen it last night, it won't take anything more than an aggressive toothy edge, not unlike D2. i can't quite get it to paper slicing sharp like i did with my ka-bar. maybe it just needs a heat treat? i know i'll HT my next blade...

The kind of edge you describe can produce one heckuva working edge. I guess you should watch for edge retention to know if it's a project knife or a good user knife. Great effort. Better than I could turn out - but then again I don't own any power tools. :)

Wish I did. :(

you'd probably be better off with a handfull of files and sandpaper... this knife looks a lot better in the pics than it does irl. my next one will undoubtedly be done entirely by hand. go find yourself an old sawblade and some files, maybe an angle grinder if you can. you gotta give it a try it's really worth it. nothing like a handle that feels like you're holding a warm stick of butter :D

First, you're talking to a prep school boy who never took a shop class in his life. Angle grinder - wtf??

Second, what does this mean? It doesn't sound good though. :(

LOL
Angle grinder:

used commonly to cut and shape metal. very useful but also can claim a finger as one of it's own very quickly. i 'spose you could use a hacksaw in the place of one.

ok, so maybe my description wasn't perfect, imagine if you will, a handle that feels like it is constantly changing it's shape to fit your hand perfectly, but is still very solid. it's awesome!
