My First Knife

Buck Mayo Cutback
Buck Mayo Hilo

Same knife. The Hilo is slightly larger. They are 440C and about 30 bucks.

For more money you can get better knives. But under your price requirement, aside from the SS Delica, I do not think any of the better knives are closer to what you are looking for.

Wicked, I have no idea why they make the stanless version of the Delica in AUS-6 but the FRN version in VG-10. You would think that they would standardize and make the blades for all of the Delicas of the same steel except when they do a "Sprint Run" with a special steel such as ZDP-189.

Pezman, if you don't like the looks of the hump on the usual Spyderco knives, go to your local WalMart and take a look at the Spyderco Native that they sell. It has FRN scales, a lock back, and a 3" S30V blade. It costs $40.00 and you simply cannot beat that price for that super steel blade.

FullerH & Wicked
Sierra Trading Post only deals in closeouts, blems and overstocks. These are probably nib older models that they found somewhere. My original delica from mid 90's is aus 6 or 8.

Check at the Wal-Mart for knife #60. TAhat is a Spyderco Native with an S30V blade. $39.95:thumbup:

The Buck/Mayo Cutback and Helo are both made of 420HC according to Buck, and they are still a bit too big.

I really like the style of the Buck Sirus (as I mentioned), but my issue is that folded it is 4.5 inches long. This seems like it would be difficult to carry discretely in an office environment. Also, with a 3.25in blade, it might cause some consternation with the more conservative temperments.

The Delica is nice, but I also noticed the AUS-6 steel on the statinless handle. Not sure what the idea is with that.

I was at Wal-Mart last night and stood around for 20 minutes waiting for someone to come back to the sporting good counter. I finally got fed up and left. You know, if I weren't so blasted cheap and poor I wouldn't shop there... but I am, so I'm stuck. Maybe I will be able to make it over there on my lunch break.

I did come across a couple of AUS-8 knives that are ok.
The Kershaw Splinter is nice, a bit too stylish, but a good size. $54 here:

The SOG Twitch II is pretty cool, and a perfect size and shape, but the lockback design it uses doesn't appear to be secure.

Any thoughts?

I am still trying to find a good knife store around here in Houston. The one that vinny72xx suggested is waaaay on the other side of town.

TLR, New Graham has the stainless steel Delica with an AUS-6 steel blade and they sell only the current models. Personally, I don't like the stanless steel scales on a knife as they become too damned slippery when wet. I have a Police with stainless steel scales and that is one of the reasons that I no longer use it. So I cannot understand why someone would pay more for a knife with scales that are not as useful and that has a blade of lesser steel than the one that is generally offered.

Buy that. I've been there and done that with knives and this is the perfect first real knife for your needs. If you don't like it I'll buy it off you.

I've always wondered why the stainless knives used softer steels too. I think I'll go ask Sal on the Spyderco forum. I suppose the real appeal of the SS knives is visual. Some people don't care what the knife is made of as long as it's all nice and shiny, which means they have the sophisticated taste of a raccoon.

Personally, if I need something to be that stainless, I go with H-1.

........Can anyone tell me the location of a good knife store in Houston, TX?.......

Hi Pezman, welcome to the addiction!

If you are close to 59/Harwin there are many wholesale stores there, some "tools store" carry cheapo Chinese make knife; however, I have good luck finding bargains at Snake Eye, they carry some decent CRKT, Kershaw, Cold Steel etc.

Just tell the Mrs you want to take her shopping and accidentally stumble into the knife store :D

Good luck and enjoy.

According to the spyderco website the NEW ss delicas and enduras at least have vg10 steel. I admit I don't understand why the older ones were different.

Thanks to all who replied. the help was appreciated.

To all who don't see the benefit of a metal handle, I agree that many other handle materials would be more secure, or more sturdy. But I like the look and style of a metal handle. I will probably have to pick up a hardy durable camp knife at some time in the future, and then I will definately go for the better grip and the more durable materials.

But for style, I like my pocket-knife the way I like my refrigerator: cold, stainless steel finish, and full of leftover pizza... ok, maybe not that last one.

That CRKT full throttle is pretty nice, although I have settled on the Buck Sirus in ATS-34.

I know, I know, I was asking for other options to this knife, and now I changed my mind. But dang it, I really like it. :D

My primary concern was that the knife would be too big to carry around every day in dress slacks, and since I was unable to find one anywhere in town, I was never able to get a good idea of the size or fit. Finally I had enough of it, and made a full size mockup out of cardboard (I'm a geek, what can I say) to see if it worked. I have been carrying the cardboard around for a couple of days, and am surprised that I can't really notice the size.

I also was able to find it online for around $60 including shipping. I passed the info along to my wife, and she is going to get it for my birthday.

SunnyBunny - is Snake Eye a "knife" store, or a store that happens to carry knives?

cuz I really want to find a good "knife" store...

I recently picked up a Benchmade 707 sequel for $77 shipped on the Bay, one of the 1st production run knives. It is great to carry, very smooth action- the blade almost jumps out with a slight flick of the thumb. Top it off with the axis lock and it makes for a really nice knife. It would seem to fit the criteria you listed very well, it just might take a bit of patience to find one in that price range.

I think that raccoon comment earlier sounded a bit condescending. Just to be clear, I too like shiny things, but SS handles just don't work for me. My hands sweat too much.

The Sirus is a good knife. I'm sure you'll like it. Getting a good knife in 420HC might just save you from the steel snobbery that a lot of us suffer from.

I think you'll find you're not the only one who does cardboard mock-ups. That's one of the signs of a serious knife knut.

Second for WalMart #60 native in S30V. I hate WM though! Great deal on a great knife.
Jason
The WM Native is a knife everyone should own. The only reason not to would be that you refuse to give Squal-Mart any of your money. I know people who hold this conviction, and I support them completely. It's something I fight with myself over from time-to-time. I do a lot more shopping at Target than I used to, but they don't stock any Spyders. So I caved.

No Sir it is a tools store, carry all kind of cheapo copy from China, just like the bunch of wholesale stores around that area. Snake eye standout because it has some good quality name brand knives(make in China?) at reasonable price, their displace is about 5-6 times than Wally-mart. OTOH I brought some "Batman throwing bats" for my sheeple friends for $6 a pieces.

Personally I have never see a pure knife store in TX, always piggyback with the gun/sporting goods stores. The best store is our exchange forum :D but watch your CC
