MY first opinel knife.

Has anyone had any problems with the locking ring? I have a carbon #8 and the locking ring is very hard to rotate. Also does anyone have any pics of customized Op's? I would like to see how French kids customize their knifes.

spides, welcome to Bladeforums. :)

Try soaking at least the front end of the handle in mineral oil. This will keep it from swelling when wet, and will preserve the parts from rust. It may also make th ring rotate more smoothly.

I got an old carbon #9 from dad ( before he went). The handle was a wee bit cracked, so I slivered in some glue, and wired it together to let it dry. Now fixed, I ground a drop point on it, and it stays in my Pelican box survival kit. Funny thing is, with all the knives I own , I choose it for the kit. It's easy to sharpen, light weight , and feels good in the hand. The latter being one of my most important criteria, along with steel type. Old school carbon for me.

Wow Stringer, you are real good at making good first impressions, must be hording girls at clubs. ;)

opinels are good knives for the $$ i would never edc one though, i lived without pocket clips for yrs and dont intend to do so anymore, one hand openings nice too, the 2 opinels i own have been relegated to kitchen duty and are doing well at that though.

I think perhaps we shouldn't bait the troll again after Esav just went through the trouble of saving the thread and others have brought it back on topic....

I have heard nothing but good about Opinels. They seem like solid workhorses at really affordable prices, like Mora's. I have Mora's, no Opinels yet, something I plan to remedy soon . Congrats on your first!

In my experience rotating the locking ring and pulling the blade out of the handle can be hard when an Opinel is new. After using it regularly during a couple of weeks, this problem is usually gone.

I have 3 Opinels, #'s 6, 7 and 8, all in carbon. The light weight is very nice, I generally carry them in a pocket as a backup. They make good expendable loaners, but that hasn't really come up for me.

However there are times when being light and having no pocket clip are a bonus, like if I'm going someplace where visible pocket clips are a no-no. NYC, for example, which I live 30 miles from and often have to visit (family and friends living there and all...)

I love Opinel knives.
Easy to sharpen.
Great to make a sandwhich.
very lightweight , even the No12.
You can carve and personalize it.
Inexpensive.
Available in different sizes & bladeshapes , even a couple of folding saws.
Doesn't particularly inspire fear.

These are some of the reasons why!

Oh, I forgot to say , after some use , the wood handle has some beautiful highlights.
And I think the knife has a simple beauty.
Dagon said it best when he described this sort of knife as a 'lifestyle knife'

YES, yes, sorry but they sure do look so. :foot:
How ever I don't think opinel looks gay.

I dare any red-blooded male to look at this picture and tell me that pink Izulas are gay. ;)

Here are most of mine, I have a few more but they are all Carbon #7's. The tiny #2 (almost cut off) at the bottom is my one true EDC. I got it as a free gift from Opinel and it went on my keychain the day it arrived and has gone with me absolutely everywhere no matter what else I am carrying.

BOIOIOING!!! I'm envious of the collection.

I really want to get my hands on some of the smallest Opinels... no luck finding folk that seel them separately in Canada, so I may have to break down and get a boxed set eventually.

Opinels make great users and they're also fun to play around with. They're not bombproof-tank-prybars but that bothers me not at all. They're reasonably strong and secure knives that take a great edge and cut well, that works for me.

Modified #12

Yobbos1, nice collection! I don't know Opinels are available in blue and yellow handles. Where do you get them?

opinel is one helluva great knife for anyone on the cheap.
seems more likely that here's one true bright example where notable Continental frugality pays off well by having created a strictly basic generic product line with superb cutting form and function.

Thanks for the comps. Here's yellow, blue, oak, ash, olive. You have to scrounge around on that famous auction site but there are some great deals when they come up. Once I finish collecting the colors, I'm on to the animal themes and the 'mountain art' series. Not really into the comemoratives (yet;)) I think red and green are the last colors I need.
