Thank you all guys for such a hearty welcome!

Шалом ! And welcome ! Are you located in Israel Igor, if you don’t mind me asking ?
I might have a question further on, about traditional Krav Maga knife that I’m curious about the design…

Yes, I'm located in Israel. You are welcome to ask me any question you might have, I will do my best to help.

Welcome to the forum! What did he tell you that left a bitter taste to you?

Yes, I knew that would probably make people wonder. All in all, it is not too complicated. It was more or less about him making considerable efforts and using the best technologies available ((just to give you some idea, he produces not only knives, but among other things also advanced components for the Israeli defense sector and even aviation contractors)), yet according to what he says, along the years and despite his efforts, he was basically met abroad with very little understanding and appreciation, many times crossing the line to sheer incompetence, ignorance and misunderstanding. And why it actually made me personally so bitter? Because I've been around for long enough to realize what his knives really worth and just how right he is about people abroad (including those of whom you would might expect at least somewhat more professional and knowledgeable approach) not taking him seriously, turning a blind eye or not even bothering to listen or give a second look. That is the short of it, and I can certainly elaborate on that.

He shouldn't let that stop him. I would imagine that knifemakers probably don't want more competition. Looking down the list of knifemakers that will be at the Blade Show in Fort Worth, Texas, I've never even heard of most of them.

He is not a young man, and after more than 30 years of professional work, he doesn't have excessive energy to start now proving himself to people who don't even want to listen. I can understand him. Plus, being a very modest man as well as residing in Israel doesn't make it easier.

I'm still in the dark. Is his work in Metallurgy, hardening/heat treating methods, or something else? He should just make knives and let his knives speak for him. That's what I would do. I've never made knives myself. And I bought Dr. Larrin Thomas's book, "Knife Engineering", and still don't understand much. All the weird sounding names make me cross-eyed.

I tried looking up Dustar knives using Google. Although there are several vendors selling them, I couldn't find a website for the maker.

These days, it's critical for makers to have a web presence to describe their work in detail, and what makes it special. Maybe this is why he hasn't had more success.

Welcome to the forum!

I think they really do. Much more so than all the hyped-up, super-expensive, "nothing-but-the-best" knives from manufacturers who spend heavily on all kinds of PR.
I would really like to see all those wise-guys agree to hand over their knives for a direct faceoff against DUSTAR knives. No kidding. Would really wanna be there to see the results too.

Well, I guess they should subscribe to the forum and show us something.

Hi G GreyBear , Igor and welcome to Blade Forums. I'm glad you are here and can share your perspective on knives that is unique to you and your knife experience.

Regarding DUSTAR Knives; can you share some pictures and your personal experiences with them? A picture paints a thousands words and I'd love to see more about the maker you're advocating and the knives they make. I love being a "first adopter" of new makers and brands!

The Facebook, Instagram, Reddit world of makers can be imposing and hard to navigate. We're a bunch of old-skool BB enthusiasts. Please share with us and welcome to Blade Forums.

Welcome!! Stick around, it’s a blast!

All I see is D2 steel. I'm still trying to figure out what is so special about Dustar knives...

What I've seen and heard from the owner when I met him is straightforward, no-nonsense and no frills approach, no BS, just straight to the point and mean business.
And his knives completely echo this approach. Plain, simple, absolutely great timeless design, best materials and top notch workmanship.

When I asked him about the specific model I wanted to buy, he just handed me the knife and said: "here, take it, look at it, check it every way you can. If you understand knives, you won't need my explanations".

And he was right. His knives are everything one expects from an extremely high-quality product, and if you do understand knives, you will come to appreciate them after only about a minute of looking, checking and playing around with them.

I would dare to say that I have yet to see knives of the quality he offers for the price he asks for them. If he was "Randall" or some other similar hyped-up manufacturer, he would easily charge you three or four times the price, make you wait ten months to get one, and then countless knife aficionados would stand in line to buy them and get ready to feel really proud to own them.

But really - what's so special here, as you've asked?

Well, to mention just a couple of things - the design and construction of these knives is IMO unrivaled in terms of sheer solidness and sturdiness - they are virtually indestructible.
Holding these knives in your hand makes an impression they were somehow made as one integral and homogeneous piece and not assembled from different parts like all other. It's a very unique and distinctive feeling that's very hard to describe - have to try it yourself to understand.
Add to that beautiful minimalistic classic lines, smart all-around design with every single detail exactly in its place, nothing superfluous, and incredible ergonomics making you feel the knife is an extension of your hand.

I hope that gives you some sort of an answer.

This might all be true, but he isn’t exactly using top shelf materials. He is using mid shelf materials. I’m sure his knives are awesome, but people get turned off by plastic FRN handles and plain old D2 steel.

If he upgraded to some better quality micarta or g10 handles, it would be a huge boost to all his knives. Upgrading from mid level D2 steel to something better would also make a big difference. Some M390, S30V, S35Vn, or S45Vn steel would be excellent.

This is all talking without any concrete basis. I have had and seen enough knives made from top materials, most sexy fashionable design, all the frills you can possibly want. I prefer his by a mile. His are just better IMO. I've sold many high-end knives I've bought but I still have 4 DUSTAR knives and a couple of their unique M2 high-speed special cutterjacks. If your thing is all sorts of fancy components and supplements, we may just have different tastes in knives.

Have you tried a CPK DEK1 or FK1/2?

Personally, I will skip on D2 everytime. Not a steel I like at all. :(
