My first returned knife

Unfortunately today I had to return a knife. This was the first time I had to this. The knife in question was the BM 755 MPR. I did a lot of research and watched a lot of reviews and things upon making the purchase and thought it was going to be an awesome knife. Like many who have reviewed it, at first glance I was not impressed by the look of the knife, but after a while I did like it.

The reason I returned it was because it simply was not what I was expecting, and especially for the $230 price point (I got the blacked out blade). The blade was totally off-centered and was rubbing against the frame of the knife, and the stop-pin which is supposed to be able to adjust the lock-up of the blade did not function properly (I changed the face of the pin to almost every stop and it did not help whatsoever). The initial lock-up was extremely late, but there was still a significant amount of up and down play which is a big no-no. There was also minor side-to-side play, but once I tightened the pivot it was much too tight to open. All in all I am pretty sad about it because if it didn't have all of those problems I would have thoroughly enjoyed the knife.

The good news, however is that I did just pre-order a knife which was the CRKT hi-jinx. I'm a little weary of purchasing a CRKT for that money, but from what I have seen and read its basically put together by Lionsteel who as we all know is known for quality, and thats really what led me to pre-order it....and IMO it looks like a sweet knife!

Have a good day y'all!

So you didnt take pics before you sent it showing the issues???

FAIL

Are you sure it was real?
My MPR is awesome.
The adjustable stop pin worked as it should, and when I did a full disassembly I found that the pivot is robust, rather than just appearing so.
The pivot screw tension is tricky, but once in the sweet spot is just fine.

Certainly perfectly centered, and nowhere near either side to scrape at all. :)

Unfortunately thats typical Benchmade QC or lack thereof...You could of called Benchmade and they would have paid to send it in and had it back to you with issues resolved. I have to do this with atleast every other Benchmade I purchase sight unseen. If I have to buy one online Im already prepared that I might have to send it in.

I put up with it as I like the Axis lock (I know this model doesnt have it), no idea why they can't get the knives right from the get go, but they do fix it.

Benchmade and ZT....gotta watch 'em.

It's why I'd never buy either brand online. After reading about both brands erratic QC on the fourms I want em in my hand before I buy either.

Oh it was definitely real as I bought it from a reputable dealer. Idk I think I'll probably just use the money for a southard, or get my 0770cf...probably the southard though.

I keep reading about these crappy knives from various brands, but see very few pictures of the knives in question.

Why doesn't anyone post pics anymore?
Like this. Or that one up there^^^

Every ZT I've got was purchased online and they are all flawless. I can't say the same for Benchmade.

I would never put those two companies on the same level concerning QC. every day there is a new thread about someone's crappy new benchmade, and I'm willing to bet there are many more who don't speak up.

ZT on the other hand has members raving and drooling over their knives, and at a premium price too. You get the same old Benchmade QC bs for the hiked up prices now. I can only hope that price hike is going into their QC, but I don't see myself buying very many more benchmades in the future anyway.

The only plane that these companies share is their excellent customer service IMO

Just not much of a picture guy. Also it's a hassle for me to do. Unless I'm wicked pumped about something, chances are I'm not uploading a picture. If there was an easier way to upload rather than photobucket or tumblr, I'd probably be more inclined.

Anyway I love my zts...all have been perfect. I have an 801 (customized by maprik), 801cf, 0770, and a 0560, with a 0770cf on the way and hopefully a 0200 as well!

Uh, there are loads of threads regarding ZT and sticky locks, beastly detents, no detents, and it goes on and on. NO company spoken of here gets utter praise.

Sounds like you managed to get a lemon. The MPR I owned was nearly perfect. None of the issues you explained.

Well I have gone through a lot of Benchmades with issues few and far between. I had a 707 Sequel that would not lock up properly - took it apart, lubed the lockbar area, and voila problem solved. Detente on my Mini Dejavoo was non-existent. Otherwise I remember some slightly off center blades but do not consider that a real problem.

As for Zero Tolerance, I have had two of their knives (0550 and 0560) with major lock slip problems. I learned of the lock failure the hard way with the 0550 - cut my index finger to the bone.

Exactly.

Recently it seems the Benchmade critics are about as vocal as the Zero Tolerance fans. Every company is going to put out some duds, the key thing for me is how they take care of you after the fact. Treat the people coming on here praising one brand as flawless after owning one or two knives the same as the people bashing another brand having owned only one or two knives - with lots of salt.

So in other words, you are more than willing to spend the time it takes to create a hate thread but totally unwilling to to provide any sort of evidence to support your claims.

Got it.

An aside on my experience with one of BM's now discontinued knives. The first time I saw the 760LFTi I knew I wanted one, but the price put me off. I researched this knife for months, I found all sorts of crap talk; it's got a sticky lock, it's off-center, the M4 was too soft, the detent sucked, it had blade play. I found one on here for a good price and jumped on it after the seller assured me it had none of these issues. It came and it was PERFECT. Super solid early lockup, NO wiggle at all, adjustable pivot, centered, smooth as glass and acceptable (OK, it's a bit light but It's fine by me) detent and that M4 cuts like nobody's business through any material without rolling or chipping the edge. It's one of my all-time favorites and I am glad I didn't listen to the crap perpetuated here.

Lol don't need to prove anything to you. If this is such a "good, honest community" then my word should be good enough. And it's not a hate thread, it's just me sharing my disappointment...never once did I use the word hate. But thank you making assumptions. You should be a little more trusting rather than such a skeptic, but maybe not.

Got it.
