I always enjoy reading WIP's and usually learn something from them, So I decided to start one on a knife I am making for a fellow BF'er. I will be updating the thread as I am in futher progress with the knife, I have very simple tools and will take pictures of each process while finishing the knife.
Ok here was my first sketch for the "Moss Knife".

Subscribing... can't wait to see this one all finished up and in my hands!!

Get to it Charlie :D

Alright!:D:thumbup:

Since this stuff is 3/8ths and forged by hand I have a intresting way of forging out the tang, Im getting some pictures together tonight of how I do it.

Charlie, you putting Shannon to work as the staff photographer? Get a picture of your Christmas present in the background!

I forge with water on my anvil to keep scale knocked off the blade, It leaves it very pretty without all the scale., but Ive heard that 68 year old cougar pee works better, but couldnt get mine to hold still

Something else to note is water on your anvil will also prolong your heat on your blade, sounds wierd but its true, I can honestly tell it stays hotter longer once you get to going with it.

My problem has always been keeping water on the anvil once it gets hot.

My anvil get's hot enough to burn ya if your not careful.

I use a spray bottle and squirt the anvil just before I take my piece out, it's usually dry long before I'm done with my heat.

Heres some more pictures of the blade being forged, next coming up is the tang

This 3/8 1095 is hard to forge, gotta get it hot and hammer like crazy, here you can see the distal taper and the blade finished, now I will cut about 2 inches behind the ricasso and cut it and get ready to forge the tang

Heres my equipment that I use in making knives, a small drill press, small bandsaw, both very cheap brands, my grinder is hiding over there in the corner and my finishing table. I know everything is dirty, if it was spotless I woudl never find anything,LOL
