Hello,

I told my friend about my new passion, RAT Cutlery knives and he got inmediately into them to :D
Now, he asked me to pick him some,he's lazy dude .(also the fact that I am a regular here helped ;) )

He wants one to EDC in his front pocket but worries that the Izula is to big and will be pokin' out of his pocket.
Just like me he lives on a ranch and we both go lots of hiking outdoors.

So, I was thinking about an Izula for EDC, an RC-3 for his tasks at the ranch and an RC-5 for the hikes out in the wood.

One problem though, he can't afford all three of them...

So I've come up with multiple options:

Option 1:
Buy an Izula for EDC and buy an RC-4 to combine the around the house tasks together with the hiking tasks.
That would be lots cheaper.
Downside of this option is, maybe the izula is to long to carry it in jeans pockets for EDC and he really set his heart on an RC-5.

Option 2
He should continue carrying his folder for EDC, buy an Izula which will be hung from his belt or some other way for tasks around the house and buy an RC-5 for the hikes.
Downside, will the Izula and the RC-5 cover all aspects of the ''cutting spectrum''? I mean, won't there be a gap, in wich the Izula is too small and the RC-5 to big? Or will the Izula perform good with ''around the house'' tasks?

Option 3:
Continue carrying his folder for EDC, buy an RC-3 for tasks around the house and buy an RC-5 for hiking.

So, pretty big dillemma...

Would really appreciate it if you would give this some thougts ;)

Option 1 - since the RC-5 is not an ideal hiking knife, but the RC-4 is. Unless you guys are tiny, you won't have a problem with the izula sticking out of your front pocket. I carry mine like that all the time.

Exactly what the others have said so far. I caretake a 600 acre ranch here in Texas and the Izula and RC-4 are ideal for what he needs. I am 6ft tall and weigh 186 lb. The Izula rides comfortable in my jeans pocket hanging upside down by a piece of paracord attached to m beltloop. Does not stick out a bit. RC-4 rides on my belt most of the time.

+1 on option #1
Don't you have any RAT's to let him fondle and get a feel for? I think the RC-5 is a sexy looking beast too, but I don't think he realizes how big it is and how thick the blade is.

+1 for Option 1

The Izula is a very easy knife to pocket. Some people tie paracord to it and hang it in their pocket and so they don't even feel the weight of it.

Izula rides just fine in jeans pocket. I suggest having a piece of paracord tied between the belt and the hole at the tip of the sheath. That way he can just pull the handle of the Izula when he needs it, and when the cord is tight, the knife comes out of the sheath.

Option one sounds good, but if he really wants the RC5, then don't deny him the thrill of getting it... Once he has one, he will eventually want ALL of them

+1 on Option #1. With the added advice to start saving and get at least one of every size.

I also think option #1 would be the best way for him to go. The Izula will fit in his pocket fine & the RC-4 is ideal for the other needs that you mentioned. I think he would be very pleased with this combination. I really think the RC-5 would be more knife than he would need for hiking & he could always get the RC-5 later just to have one if he wants to.

Hornady,

En zoals anderen al zeiden: eventually he WILL get all of them.

(Just talking about the sense of option number one in our native language.)

Thanks,

D-R

Exactly.

My Izula rides just fine in my jeans pocket and it doesn`t even bother me when I wear my tool belt (pouches).Option one is the way to go.

Again, option 1. I feel funny if my Izula is NOT in my right front pocket. RC4, best all arounder in my opinion. I also have the 3 & 6, and so will you and your friend sooner than you think! :D

Thanks for all the input!
I can clearly see what your preferance is :D
I was just wondering, will the RC-4 not attract funny looks from other people coming by his house, like the think he has a little sword hangin from his belt?
And on the other side, does it perform well enough in the woods, shelter making, fuzz sticks, batoning and slicing, due to is small size?

Greetings,
Dirk
