My future cabin/home site

Just an update and new toy (That should pay for it's self quickly)
The house plans are just about finalized and have been running down all the requirements for the permit with the help of an old friend that lives in S. Utah. I decided just to build both the garage and home at the same time, it will save cost in the long run and when I get it dried in, I can finish the interior as I go.
An old neighbor and friend of mine built a cabin up above Ceder City Utah about 20 years ago and still lives there, I was asking him about borrowing his Backhoe that he had up there that's been sitting and not doing much since he built his cabin, he said sure, but I'm done using it lets make a deal...After a little haggling, we came up with a sweet deal we were both happy with, he got my 1981 H&K91 rifle package and just a little bit of cash and I got his 1981 Case 580D Backhoe. It runs like a champ and has 5300 hours on it, every thing is tight and works great except the right rear brake needs a new master cylinder. Unfortunately it's been parked outside most of the time and the paint is pretty faded.
My Dad, my friends son and I hauled it off Ceder Mountain two weekends ago and I was able to put it through it's paces on Sunday of that weekend at my home site. I'm heading back this weekend and will dig and set a water line to the home site & travel trailer. It will be nice not having to haul water any more and to dig with something other than a shovel!
The old backhoe will pay for itself real quick with the money I'll save putting in the septic tank, pad and footings my self!

Always need a piece of equipment handy. The old ones do the same work as the new ones and you can own it for the cost of renting a new one for one project. I am sure you already figured that one out. Glad to see your living the dream.

Congrat's on starting your journey toward "independent living".

My wife and I did the same thing in January. We bought 11 acres with a little house on it and started the process of making the house liveable, developing the land, etc. There have been A LOT of 12-14 hour days involved, but I can honestly say this:

You will feel immense comfort, contentment and security as your project starts to take shape. We left a midwestern subdivision for "rural life" and would NEVER go back!

Again - congrats and enjoy the process.

Perfect! I'll render my services to dispatch anything four legged as well. Your HK91 would have made a good pill for the yotes...I'm sure you have alternates...
Beautiful site and plans you have...

Thanks all!
Hated to let the HK go, but I have a DSA SA58 FAL that fits
me better, plus the HK took care of most the cost of the backhoe.
DTOM sounds like your doing it right, congrats.

Salvo, thanks for sharing your plans. I strive for the same life experience. Thanks for giving me a little kick in the pants to get moving on it. Keep up the good work, cant wait to see more pics. Thats a nice lookin tractor, small price to pay for your third hand

salvo, I too have a DSA SA58 FAL and a DSA SA58 Para FAL. They fit me much better than the two German HK91's I had. Sounds like we're of like mind.

Enjoy your property - no other housing option beats the liberty of homesteading.

Update.
I should be picking up the building plans this weekend, I have started permitting with the county and have met septic system density requirements. I need a perk test and soils report, then should be good to go for my building permit.
In the mean time I have had three concrete river crossings installed on my property, courtesy of the power company, that utilize a diversion and ditch on my property for hydro power, there end of the deal is to maintain the road.

I have my water piping almost done from our well, and it turned into a major job, thank goodness I have the backhoe. Getting the water line under the river was a trick, I had the power company burry a section of 8" pipe under the river when they were building the concrete river crossing, once I dug up and located both ends I could push the pipe under the river :)

A lot of other things have been done as for planning and fencing, not to mention packing and moving the contents of my home in Vegas (ongoing). I had a Sea Container, moved to the property for storage and my tools. I have also trailered my Land Cruiser up last weekend, it's starting to get cold and the LC is much warmer than the quad for running around the property.
Unfortunately I have not had any time for fishing or hunting, had some nice campfires though!

Very cool. Glad to see you are making steady progress. It makes for a really good feeling when you see your place improving little by little to the point that you really enjoy it being your own.
