alot of people talk about their go bags, ready to go at a moments notice. i don't have a go bag, and for the longest time no ready-to-go preparations at all.

now that i have had been collecting various stuff for a long time, i have more duplicates so that i can afford to put together a kit that i can leave alone for emergencies, instead of digging through it and taking it apart for every daytrip or little excursion into the woods.

i put together this utility belt for an unexpected overnighter/day hike kit that i can grab in those sudden, unplanned trip cases (i wish ) but i figure its good to have around anyways...

it is built on a heavy nylon webbing belt my uncle picked up at the PX (he is in the airforce), with a pouch i recieved as a gift at the CT gathering, a canteen in pouch (also from uncle) and a boker fixed blade.

firesteel, fatwood, waxed paper, PJ cotton balls in film canister. half of a soft arkansas stone, folding saw, mylar blanket, survival blanket (also a gift from the CT gathering). I am going to get a couple of meal replacement bars to toss in here too.

the boker is a light, thinly ground blade. i put a convex edge on it to 1200 grit + strop. it is comfortable in the hand. not my favorite knife, but it is a very good knife that i would be happy to have as my only knife if it came down to it. i can't forsee a time when i wouldn't at least also have my mora and folding knife, but this is just in case, as a backup if my others fail or possibly even to lend to a friend.

this kit would get me comfortable through a night or two in the summer, and late spring/early fall.

worn high on the hips, it rides well without too much bouncing around and it doesn't feel too heavy. in a couple of weeks when school lets out i am going to take it for a night or two in the woods outback to test it, and make any needed changes...

ah the nailpolish...i did them a few weeks ago for prom, and haven't got around to doing a proper color yet...

thanks for the comment though...

Might want to add a canteen cup (to boil water) and/or some Katadyne MicroPur water purification tablets in there, too.

i keep the canteen full (with a drop or two of chlorine bleach to keep it from going bad somehow), but thanks for the suggestion. there isn't really enough room for a container, unless i add another pouch (which i just may have to do...or graduate to a proper fannypack), so i will add a dropper bottle with bleach or some purifying tabs.

spooky, nice set up. i think i remember when you posted the break-down of that kit...

pit, your maxi-mini fanny pack kit was also on my mind when i put this together...

i know that the local dick's has some high tech fanny packs with really good suspension etc, i may have to check them out. plus, they are in sheeple friendly colors (subdued blues, purples and reds). i really want a pack that can carry a couple of full sized 1 litre bottles in side pockets for easy access, so that i would have more room in the pouch for goods. loops and under-straps, like on spooky's bag would be good too, so that i could tie a large knife or tarp or something to the outside, again to leave more room in the pouch for goods. anyone know of a pouch like spooky's but with really good external side bottle holders?

thanks for the tips guys...

Siguy the litle pocket on the canteen cover wil hold 2 small bottles of water purification tablets, your set up looks like a real good start . You should really injoy tweaking it as you go along.

Here's my utility belt - nylon shotgun belt, Nikon bino's, Maxi M5, waistpack, Nalgene and holder, and Fixed Grip:

very nice...your setup looks alot more hardcore than mine...i think it might be the nice clean black vs white snow you have there...

Good, simple but effective setup Siguy. Yes, a small bottle of water purification tablets will fit in that small outside pocket of your canteen pouch...if you add it, I would "dummy" cord it to the pouch to keep it from accidently falling out though. Another simple addition is a canteen cup and even the nesting canteen cup stove. I've found that you can place the stove stand over some hot coals and feed some smaller twigs in and it will heat a canteen cup of water up quite quickly...Potable Aqua, cup and stove stand shouldn't cost you more than about $15-20 for all three.

Surely that's not really your hand... :p

Nice setup. I really like compact kits. I use a camera bag that I bought at a Coleman outlet store. It fits right on my belt, holds my altoids tin, paracord, firesteel, SAK, etc.
