alot of people talk about their go bags, ready to go at a moments notice. i don't have a go bag, and for the longest time no ready-to-go preparations at all.
now that i have had been collecting various stuff for a long time, i have more duplicates so that i can afford to put together a kit that i can leave alone for emergencies, instead of digging through it and taking it apart for every daytrip or little excursion into the woods.
i put together this utility belt for an unexpected overnighter/day hike kit that i can grab in those sudden, unplanned trip cases (i wish
) but i figure its good to have around anyways...
it is built on a heavy nylon webbing belt my uncle picked up at the PX (he is in the airforce), with a pouch i recieved as a gift at the CT gathering, a canteen in pouch (also from uncle) and a boker fixed blade.
firesteel, fatwood, waxed paper, PJ cotton balls in film canister. half of a soft arkansas stone, folding saw, mylar blanket, survival blanket (also a gift from the CT gathering). I am going to get a couple of meal replacement bars to toss in here too.
the boker is a light, thinly ground blade. i put a convex edge on it to 1200 grit + strop. it is comfortable in the hand. not my favorite knife, but it is a very good knife that i would be happy to have as my only knife if it came down to it. i can't forsee a time when i wouldn't at least also have my mora and folding knife, but this is just in case, as a backup if my others fail or possibly even to lend to a friend.
this kit would get me comfortable through a night or two in the summer, and late spring/early fall.
worn high on the hips, it rides well without too much bouncing around and it doesn't feel too heavy. in a couple of weeks when school lets out i am going to take it for a night or two in the woods outback to test it, and make any needed changes...
