my "go belt"

i used to carry a kit in a camera pouch, but after a few trips in the woods i realized what a pain it was to dig through that tiny pouch to get to the goods (crammed in tight).

since then i have reduced the volume of my gear, and gone up a couple of sizes in the pouch. i don't carry a whole lot of little things anymore, mostly just a few larger, longer lasting things that i can trust.

i forgot to mention that i my pocket i always have a tube of krazy glue (for patching myself up), a tube of chapstick (for lubing things and keeping my lips conditioned), a bic lighter or a match case (depending on my mood), and about a 1.5 foot length of bright yellow paracord...plus whatever ends up in my pockets by the time i make it into the woods.

You could always get black lipstick:D instead of chapstick.

Anyway, how do you like the Boker arbolito?

Maybe slightly OT, but...
Back in the day, where I grew up, only freaks used black nail polish. But that was then and this is now. Lots of great, well-balanced, nice normal kids get piercings, tats, etc... Big flick, IMO it's more important to reach guys like siguy and spread the word to "get ready" and make a PSK for yourself, than it is to razz them maybe until we piss them off and they go away. Not to mention the lurkers. I think any and everyone should feel welcome and respected in this forum, regardless of their aesthetic or cosmetic choices, unless they completely troll out. Bottom line siguy gave us pictures, we need to give him props. Then we can razz the CR@P out of him, but first and foremost there should be no question that he is cool here.

littlehairy, i appreciate the support, but its no big deal. part of the reason i do it is just to hassle the conservatives at my school... and i'm glad that these gents are well versed in smilies so that i can tell they are joking around. i hate to see fights started over the net when people can't judge facial expressions or tone of voice...

the nail varnish and goofy clothes are what i wear on the world's stage just because its fun to do...at heart i am a woodman through and through.

about the boker;
i think that it really makes a much better food prep knife than a bushcrafter. whittling fuzzies it splits the wood more than shaves it because of the very thin edge, but it has a great secure grip (and it could lose the choil with out tears from me) and it is one of a very few knives that i have that has a decent sheath. the spine is sharp, throws good sparks. could be sharpened a little more, but i tied a scraper to my firesteel anyways so i don't see the need. if i felt like it, i could grind off the edge and put a little bit thicker edge on it, but it performs fine like this. batons well on small stuff and the fine point is great for precision drilling and whittling hollows (fireboard, spoon, etc)

oh and i do have some black lipstick... but i only wear it on halloween ;)

macclint; i have used all of the items individually, to at least the extent that i am comfortable with and used to them. i don't like putting something in a kit unless i know how it works and know it will work.

just an update:

tonight i was feeling restless/fidgety so i dumped out my kit for a re-evaluation and discovered that i could make a couple of changes that greatly improved it without adding much weight or bulk at all;

looks almost the same on the outside, except for the white mess on the side of the pouch:
DSCN6397.jpg

its actually a carabiner with 4 coils of paracord about 5 or 6 feet long each, and 4 little wire loops with hooks
DSCN6401.jpg

i made room in the main pouch by tucking the folding saw into the canteen pouch:
DSCN6403.jpg

i open the pouch and see:
DSCN6405.jpg

here it is spilled out. it is pretty clear what i added:
DSCN6408.jpg

coffee can with fold-flat bail from some 16 gauge steel wire, tarp clips, granola bar. i put the emergency blanket into the can, and then fit the rest of the items around the can in the pouch.

i feel much better about the kit as it is this way, but i still need to pick up some water purifying pills. i also want to add a better sharpener. the broken stone is fine (and i actually used it to touch up my mora while i had it out) but it is a little tricky to use and can't do alot of work...i was thinking one of those diamond rods, but can't find a grit rating anywhere. also thinking about one of those diafolds that DMT does.

just realized i didn't explain what the wire loops are for-
i made them to hook into the loops on the tarp clips (or onto my poncho tarp grommets etc) to allow me to use tent stakes i make out of sticks instead of carrying stakes.

Siguy - I think you can add more space by adding a canteen cup (like previously mentioned), as the canteen cup fits in the same pouch as the canteen. Another idea for ya, try to pick up a regular G.I. first aid kit. It will fit perfectly on your belt and add some sturdy space. But it looks good:thumbup: What do you store in the little flap/pocket in the canteen pouch? I believe that pouch was originally intended for iodine tabs, but not positive.

Looks great siguy! I saw a post somewhere where a guy made a nesting stove for the smaller coffee can like you have. Great for making a smaller fire just to boil water. No issues with the coffee can setup...sure the canteen cup would save you some room, but the larger coffee can and bail makes it a little more user-friendly for open fires.

Oh, and for the "tactical" nail polish...I much prefer OD green or tan as it blends a little better in my area:D

Continue to refine and test it out...my son really liked the set up.

ROCK6

I used to wear glow in the dark nail polish :) it was more subtle then the black my freinds wore, and I felt it was more "from the heart" goth. I still have a lego's breif case full of glow in the dark stars...

I'm having a sar5 modified to be a choiless knife with a gaurd by garth at the busse custom shop soon, it's gonna be AWESOME. obviously this isn't a survival belt by any means like the ones shown here, this was actually my edc for 2 years. I'm including it more to contrast the idea of nail polish with the whole package of a person. back when that photo was taken, my belt contained from left to right counter clockwise:

monocular
busse hogsjtacle
busse modified thin NICK
Leatherman charge xt+full bit kit

and then in the pockets I had a surefire g2, lighter, box cutter, paracord hojojutsu bundle, and a bunch of other stuff... my pants weighed 12 pounds.

sadly I'm slowly working back up to it after having slimmed down to just a pen and a box cutter.

spooky, nice set up. i think i remember when you posted the break-down of that kit...

i really want a pack that can carry a couple of full sized 1 litre bottles in side pockets for easy access, so that i would have more room in the pouch for goods. loops and under-straps, like on spooky's bag would be good too, so that i could tie a large knife or tarp or something to the outside, again to leave more room in the pouch for goods. anyone know of a pouch like spooky's but with really good external side bottle holders?

I have been happy with the Mountainsmith line. I bought their largest fanny pack about 12 years ago and have been very happy with it. Has the under straps and lash downs you are looking for and two large, net bottle carriers left and right of the main pack. I just saw the updated version and they have retained the basic design.

Good luck,
Mark

Nice... :D

Kinda like why I have my piercings.

Why not get to know me, then judge me, rather than judging the way I look.

Nice kit, don't be afraid to tweak it, then chuck it all and rebuild it, and then start over again!

Nice write-up on the Boker BTW..

Thanks!

maxkimber, i will look at those cups, but i was just playing around with what i had around the house. nothing in the little pocket yet, that's where i'll put the water cleaning tabs.

rock, i carry a small soda can stove in my regular camping billy, it keeps it safe and allows me to boil water and warm things up without fuss. i will keep working on it

canary, i wore glow in the dark once, but it didn't glow enough for me...

looks like a heavy setup, i hear ya on the heavy load. at one point i used to carry around a 15 pound pack everywhere. it was basically a BOB. i have slimmed down to a tube of superglue, a bic lighter, chapstick, a piece of cord, and a folding knife (along with whatever i pickup throughout the day) i intend to keep it lightweight. i realized i hate being bogged down with stuff.

what do you do everyday to need (or be able to) carry all that stuff?

mark, thanks for that recommendation i will check it out. sounds about perfect

mike, i'm there with you man...

now I'm down to my leatherman, a swamp rat rat tail, a lighter, pen, permanent marker, box cutter, tailors tape, phone keys and wallet.

Honestly nothing. the idea was that I wanted a slicer for large jobs, a chopper for heavier jobs like batoning and chopping. I had absolutely no need of the paracord, and the monocular was consistently unused. but now I carry the rat tail because it can do pretty much anything from prying to batoning to slicing to food prep, but it's relatively tiny and light weight (once I'm able to make kydex for it). I've moved the rest of my heavy gear into the trunk of my car, since I'll be near it most of the places i'll need the stuff, and 99% of the time it's not an immergency.

I actually use the leatherman a lot for the pliers and the scissors, and the swamp rat is my one bug out item. I keep it for batoning at camp fires and bbq's. the box cutter is my sheeple knife. the lighter is to hand to freinds when they smoke more then anything. tailors tape is for measureing because it's lighter then a measureing tape :)

Nothing wrong with setting up with what you have, in fact, I have bought very little for mine thus far (but there is a lot I want to buy:D). However, I know the canteen cups are invaluable in the field (at least they were for me back when I was in the Corps).

1. Leatherman Surge
2. AA Mag-Lite
3. Freeze +P OC/CS spray
4. CRKT Kasper
5. Swiss Card
6. SAK Camper
7. Ka-Bar TDI
8. Ka-Bar TDI LDK

Does it count if I carry most of it on a duty belt with my .357 and cuffs?

dougo, i think that certainly qualifies...

you like those sharps? ;)

i actually found a good little fanny pack at walmart earlier, i will see about posting some pics tomorrow.

I most certainly do. I work as a Private Security Officer in a bank. I am all about doing any and everything to keep from having to fire my weapon. The knives are all part of a very complex  weapons retention set-up. I just counted and I have about 40 blades of varying degrees, from an X-ACTO knife to machetes within about arm's reach. This isn't even a third of what I own. I like my knives.

Also, on the Wal-Mart, I just picked up an Ozark Trail fanny pack from them with two of the rip-off Nalgenes on it. Can't wait to brutalize it in the field.

doug, sounds like the same as mine, but i think mine is called "outdoors products" or something like that.

for the $10 i paid for it, i kinda wanna go back and get a couple more to keep one packed and one for regular trips, and maybe one to lend to an unprepared friend...

While you are there, see if they have the lil FAK's one is yellow and marketed for kids and the other is red. Both are no bigger than about 4x6. They are great on the belt. One is on the fanny pack and another on the duty belt. Have essentials for kids like hand sanitizer and sunscreen as well as bandaids, etc. I like them and they run about $7 with tax.
