My grinder and hydraulic pedestal

Way cool grinder, Bruce.

With that really long belt and adaptability, I bet your machine would set up really nice with a really big wheel, like 18-24".

Thats great Bruce! I Love:eek: cool machinery. This will inspire me to build something, new, this year.

That is a fantastic set up Bruce. I had never tried grinding setting down. But man, my old back can get to hurting after a day at the grinder. I spent some time at the Loveless grinders a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to try the sitting down thing. What do you know. It was more like driving a Cadi. than an old farm truck. How do you find the 1 hp. I have heard that they are very under powered. Or is yours ac, and getting all the vari control from the belts. I just picked up a 1 1/2 Hp. vari Burr King a couple of weeks ago, upon my return form Loveless's. Man! How did I get by with out one for 30+ years. I told the wife, that when doing fine work on a double edge it is more like stepping onto an escalator, than trying to catch a ride on a run away train! Mike

Mike congrats on the vs burrking. I have the same machine but with single speed now for 12 years. I didnt know the differance back then or I would have opted for the varible speed.

this one is only one hp with a variable speed controller but I have it geared down 2-1 because of the big 14" wheel. I can lean into it and it doesnt slow down so I must have it geared close enough.

Mike funny you should mention the 24" wheel, I have always wanted one so I got a written quote from Bader Company, they want $2150.00 just for the wheel!! I may have to wait on that one. Anybody have a 2"x24"x24" chunk of aluminum laying around?

 Wow !! Thats a lot of cheese for a wheel ! BTW, Nice job on the grinder  Looks very well made, but I would'nt expect anything less than that from you Bruce ;)

That's sort of staggering. I had expected on the order of $1000 or thereabouts. Perhaps I'll call Contact Rubber Co. next week and see what it'd run with their style wheel.

Dang....they sure are proud of that wheel.

Bruce, You've got me thinking. (this usually turns out bad)
I have a hydraulic pedestal base in the wood shop (from an old barbers chair) that I refitted for working on large wood carvings. I could raise and lower them as well as rotate them to carve without bending and such. I may re-fit this for an adjustable grinder base ( I don't do those big carvings anymore). A few steps on the pedal and up it goes. There is a lever arm that locks it in place and lowers the pedestal. It has a 3" shaft and is rated for something like 1000 pounds.

How many nickel's did Boeing get out of your pocket for the motor? I've heard good things about there surplus store. Looks like a well set up machine. Only bad thing about grinding sitting down would be the extra time it would take you to get up if your pants caught on fire.

Nicely done Bruce.

I used a 4" pipe coupler with a 1/4" plate welded to it, then bolted down thru
the coupler to the barber chair base, welded a 10" long piece of 4" pipe to
the under side of the KMG base and screwed together.

This combo has more than enough adjustment to grind sitting or standing and is very sturdy. 2 years of use and besides the occaisional 1" or 2" of hydraulic bleed off every couple weeks, I'm a happy little hillbilly!

John Davis found a electric dentist chair base that he uses with his Wilton,
Makes it very easy for visitors and makers to get just the right height.

Ray You worry about fire too much now. Pants arent that expensive anyway.

The motor was only $75. What a steal! I pulled the covers off of it to clean it out after I bought it but it was brand new inside. I dont think it ever had any use or they rebuilt it before they sold it.

Thanks Bruce! I have been using a 1 hp standard 960 Burr King for a lot of years. I bought a 2 hp non vari Bader a few months ago, man this thing has some power! But it makes way too much noise. I'm really liking the Vari- Burr King. I think I will give Rob a call about a 2 hp for the Bader. At least that way, i can slow it down, and not have the belt slap noise i get with the smaller drive wheels on the bader. ( It is the hole for the allen set screw, to secure the smaller wheels to the motor shaft that make a lot of the noise). The fan on the 2 hp. is the loudest I have ever heard. At least with a vari drive, I could turn down the rpm for less noise. I have a 1 hp. vari motor and drive here. Just trying to figure out what to use it for. I would like to get True Grit to build me up one of their billet disk grinders, and put a foot control with it. How did you tackle the side to side movement between the outer casing, and inner casing? Mike

The inner case is pushed securely against the back side of the outer case with a overcentering ramp. Thats what that long handle is on the front of the pedestal. It clamps really tight and has no slack or rattle at all.
