my grinder's ticker needs surgery...

Gixxer, in the second photo it appears that the fan is rubbing on the housing. Is this an optical illusion? If not, determine what is causing the interference. That would certainly cause a squealing as metal rubs on metal.
Good luck.

The rub is from the wheel, that is the plate from the shaft side. The other sideplate and fan are still attached. Interestingly enough that rub does not line up with the rub inside.

check the fit of the bearings in the end caps . That is what holds everything true and straight .

Just for information, I picked up a two year old but unused Leeson 3 phase TEFC motor. I hooked it up to my VFD and it vibrated very badly. I took it to a local motor shop and he found that the bearing bore in the end bell was way over sized. He told me it was not all that uncommon on a new motor. Unfortunately, I had to spend $100 to get it bored out and sleeved but now it runs like a champ.

After going back to look at the pics, I see that I wasn't paying close attention the first time. Did you move the wheel out a bit? I agree that the bearings should be replaced and it is probably the weight of the armature not the belt tension causing the rubbing. As someone else noted also check the external fit of the bearing. I realize the motor is back in, but you'll probably revisit it now that you have skills to fix it.

Good Job

I did move the wheel out when that happened, and it is still apart. I am gonna use the arbor press (hopefully) to get the bearings off.

the fit of the bearings in the endcaps is exceptionally tight so I am gonna just buy the bearings and see what happens. The cost difference from the plain jane chinese stuff to an abec 5 or 7 is huge. The larger of the two goes from $11 to $58 from the cheapo to the abec 5. The 7 is $149. I know that I should spend some money but man, $90+ for two motor bearings?

Gixxer, I am not familiar with the ABEC standard and just Googled it. One source said ABEC 1 is good for 52,000 rpm and considered an electric motor like this a low rpm use. It also said unrated bearings are not neccessarily low quality, just not rated. Also the rating is a guarantee of dimension and not material, so a bearing can have a high rating but be low quality. I have purchased a lot of bearings and have relied on the advice of the salesman. Getting a good discount at the supplier can get a quality bearing at a good price. Some suppliers are hard to get a discount from, unless you are buying for a commercial account. Some are easy to deal with. Shop around.
Good luck.
