Jca21,

Yep, my Hawg is an extended hiking pack too (Devil dog for short day hikes). Great set-up! Thanks for the pics, I like the attachments you have on it...

funny you mention it.

thanks for the nice comments

i use a maxpedition fatboy type-s on my short day hikes :)

cheers i'll throw up some knife shots to satisfy people :D

Nice looking kit.

Has the Minimag been converted to LED? If not, you increase light output and battery life significantly with such a conversion.

Some areas of BC have very limited sightlines. A whistle might be a good addition to your signaling/communications group.

whistle is part of my psk which is on my belt :)

i'll post photos of my psk once i'm done refining it :D

Interesting that you have a nagalene and canteen on a hydration pack, but I'm with you. I actually don't like hydration bladder, I prefer storing and drinking from a nagalene.

the reason i carry the nalgene is because on long trips i like to bring my steripen along for sterilizing my drinking water. also i dont really like the hydration bladder and only use it if i'm out biking.

i combine my steri pen with a coffee filter when gathering water from fast, clear, flowing streams and creeks.

cheers

Great gear, I would reccomend some paracord as well.
I did up a list at work last night of my kit, only missing 2 or 3 itms on it, and I also need to narrow the knife list from 10 to about 3.:D

thanks guys.

liam: narrowing knives is always hard :D

ivan thanks for the comment

my psk has paracord in it i will make sure the throw up some pics soon :)

Nice setup, quality gear.

Skam

thanks skam

the bag itself has been through some rough terrain as well as been chucked on the rocks at the beach.

i plan to take it out this weekend and have some fun with it.

i usually have a belt psk with me as well. i usually attach it to the top webbing of my camelbak and cache the bag when im just doing stuff. like when i go to collect shellfish i usually leave my bag at our base camp and put the belt psk on when i walk about.

cheers

Thats a nice setup! :)

A few thoughts; about the dog spray, should it be more easily accessible? You might need it in a hurry...

A pocket chain saw seems to be quite popular... I've used one once in my life, and I have to say I was not impressed. I found that the saw in my leatherman worked a lot better. However, it's a small object, so if you feel like you need it, why not keep it.

About the mora, loose that Swedish plastic-thing! Buy a decent Finnish puukko!
(just kidding, for the price those are a bargain :) )

Nice kit...Dog spray for coyotes though? I have coyotes all around and they want nothing to do with me...if I am lucky enough to see one, they run like hell from me. Have you had other reactions from coyotes? Dogs, on the other hand, I've had trouble with. I was bite once by a dog on a trail and the owner pulled out a muzzle afterwards...go figure.

I like your SOG

I have the Tomcat III, which looks like a folding version of that knife.

My only critique would be about the pouches strapped on the pack. First my disclaimer. I do a lot of climbing and scrambling where balance is very important. Thus the load in my pack needs to be close to my back and consolidated. Just seems to me that having all the extra stuff strapped on in such a low position would push out your center of gravity. All those heavy items packed away from the body would make the pack feel heavier than if they were kept in the main pack close to you.

I tend to only strap light items outside my pack if at all. I'd also suggest a pack cover to keep your stuff dry, unless you have a poncho that covers you and the pack.

It does look like the two rear pouches could be strapped on the Molle loops higher up, but would also limit access to the front pouch of the pack.

most of the trails i do dont require any climbing but you bring up an excellent point. i will have to keep that in mind when making adjustments to it after this weekends hike.

cheers
