My home built grinder

Contact wheel is from sunray. Antlers are from a taxidermist who raises elk. He cuts the antlers off just after they shed velvet. I got the whole bucket for a small skinner.

My friend. Who is a retiered machinist made everything but the contact wheel and the motor/elect. components. All materials were scraps and drops.
He has two mills and two lathes in his home shop.

I regret not doing my kmg clone like this. I wanted to follow rob's design religiously, because I was talked into doing a proven design. Spending hours milling 3/4" plate was a bad idea when I could have just used a solid base.

I showed my friend a picture of Robs KMG and one of Tracys NWG and he went from there. The base is a peice of I-beam.
I should also tell you he made a flat platen and adjustible tool rest.

Yeah, I was admiring all that obvious power too! Nice grinder, thanks for sharing. Your retired friend could have a good second income if he was so inclined. Making parts for other grinder builders if nothing else! How did you determine the height of the tool bar?

Nice looking grinder. He did a great job from what I can see. It looks like it will do the job for years. ------------

That is one of the coolest things I have seen in a while! I would love to have the skills to build such a fine machine.

Thanks guys. The idler is my fav too. It was Made from a 3 & 1/4 inch brass drop. Motor is a westinghouse 2hp 220v 3 phase with VFD control. I traded a 9 inch hunter and a 6inch EDC for the motor and VFD. Tool arm is 38 inches off the floor.
