My humble knife collection (+ buying advice)

Buying that many knives in less than a year seems like more of a shopping or retail therapy addiction not a knife addiction. Collecting, while at its core is obtaining different knives, is more about the journey and learning about them as you grow and progress. Its about using them, appretiating the subtle differences in shape, grind, function/form, the community around them, etc. Simply buying them at that rate is just retail therapy filling some other void. Many of these are not cheap either. I remember getting my Spydiechef after YEARS of collecting blades and was so blown away by how well it was made and ground, as well as the completely stainless lc200n steel. When you simply just make purchase after purchase, what is the point of this hobby? Its just contributing the already rampart consumerism within our culture.
Nice! I think we could all spend some time on Dr. Rez’s couch!

One could argue life in general has absolutely no purpose. Do whatever you want as long as it makes you happy and you don't hurt anyone with it, including yourself. Great collection, enjoy the hunt!

Part of the general point I was making is that mindless consumerism with the intent only for the next high (purchase) is bad.

It's why so much of the earth is ruined by humans. Too many have too much. It's also the reason people spend their entire lives toiling away at work so they can have/produce more stuff that isn't necessary for a happy life.

I don't think I'm an objective sense consumerism/materialism for the sake of fleeting joy can be considered any positive point of life. However you are correct life is what you make it, so why not make it something positive.

It's his money, who cares!

I Hate being told what I can do. What I can buy, and How much.Haha

If he wants to spend it on fast cars, hookers, and blow.... Who cares.
As long as nobody is getting hurt.

Who are we to judge???
What's Your BMI?
Do you have More than 2 pairs of shoes?
Do you ever water your flowers?
Do you own books you haven't read?
Ever just go for a drive?

And basically whats Good? What's Positive?

What is good for something, is usually bad for another..... That's nature.
Yup, the lioness has to feed her cubs too..... Something has to die.

Another tangent....... Everybody likes trees right?
The saying of planting a tree "for the environment"
How can That be bad??? The more trees the better?

Well, back in the early days..... Before the settlers.
There wasn't really many trees in Malibu.....

Lots of these wild fires we have. Probably in lots of places. Colorado too.

Is because of all the trees we plant.

What's it with the devil and good intentions?

Morals, and beliefs are personal.
I learned a long time ago, not to let others push Theirs on to me.

Buy More knives I say.... Haha
Thanks.

Of OP doesn't want people commenting on it then down post it on a public forum simple as that. I gave my opinion and just like him I am entitled to it.

Not sure why the irrelevant rant. I also explained why it's objectively bad.

Irrelevant is my specialty :)
...... I didn't mean to come across as attacking You personally.... I'm sorry.

I get triggered around morales and values.

That comment was just virtue signaling. Instead of looking at what I said on a deeper level it was just... "my opinion, buy more knives do what you want".
I generally agree with you on consumerism. However I completely agree with crag as well. He wasn’t arguing against your point but rather in regards to the judgement aspect.

Simply put, your judgement means nothing to me therefore I must assume my judgement means nothing to you.

In my opinion of course 😉

And for the record, I'm against blatant consumerism too. On a personal level.

I use the phrase..... Everything is either Useful.... or Landfill.
I try not to buy "landill" I despise plastic crap! That gets thrown away after a use of two.

But on My choice. I probably agree with what You say, mostly.
but....I don't wanna be TOLD what I can and cannot buy. That's my decision.

* oops, I misquoted here, I just wanted to add to it.... :)

My questions are different. How can you verify the authenticity of a used knife on the secondary market in a foreign country at too-good-to-be-true prices? Especially with no original packaging?

Would a Japanese collector not expect to pay a swollen sum to import a US made knife? What, then, would be the benefit of reselling for near nothing?

Oh man, I’ve only been into knife collecting for less than a year and I’m already 63 deep (only 26 USA made but I’m not made of money …).

If anyone has the chance, you need to check out the secondary market in Japan. You can get USA made knives for really great prices. And Japanese collectors take *really* good care of their knives and always keep the packaging, so it’s like buying new. Also, counterfeiting is a big problem in Asia, so people selling clones get recognized and banned a lot quicker than US secondary sites it seems like.

If you check out my picture, except for the Kizers (which I like as edc/toys since they have good “fidgety” action and are cheap, as opposed to high quality USA made knives which I carry for actual outdoor use), all but 6 of the bottom 39 knives are from secondary sites Mercari, Yahoo Auction and PayPay Flea Market.

Some of the prices I’ve paid are *insane*. ¥8,000($54) for a Benchmade Presidio 2, ¥7,000 ($47.50) for a BM Tengu, ¥16,500 ($120) for a Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2, ¥12,000 ($81.50) for a Techno 1. All of these didn’t have the original box which really drops the price in the JP secondary market.

Everything else was ~10-30% lower than the original retail price. For 5+ year old knives, that is so cheap by todays standards!

Now open up an ebay store ;)

When I hear of name-brand knives being sold on the secondary market at discount prices, I can't help but think "counterfeits???".

The OP specifically mentioned the Benchmade Tengu, the BM Presidio 2, and the Spyderco Techno. All of those knives are counterfeited (I just did a search for them, found them).

Also, at a glance I see other knives in the OP's collection that are counterfeited, like the BM Bugout, the BM Osbourne, BM Adamas, and the Spyderco Schempp. And that's just a casual look, and knives that I already know are counterfeited.

I'm not saying the OP's knives are fake, but like I said, low prices on the secondary market would make me somewhat suspicious.

What do we always say on this forum- buy from a reputable source.

Double-Deuces Double-Deuces Welcome to Blade forums. Nice collection. The Presidio II is one of the most underrated knives in existence.

I think you need some more fixed blades asap.
Hey thanks! Yeah I hear you on the fixed blades, I want to pick up a kiridashi in Seki and a Sanmai sub 4-inch fixed custom. Then I’ll work on it when I’m back in the US!

Bark River, Stryder and Tops are really popular fixed imports here but the prices are no better than US market even adjusting for inflation. I think there’s more fixed collectors here.

Dr Rez, to be honest you are completely right about most of the points you made. I was promoted to a Division Manager at the beginning of this year, and I was devoting all of my time to my job despite having a wife and children. I was under tremendous stress due to a difficult first 2 quarters. I spent all my free time buying knives because it was a mental release for me.

However, aside from the Kizer’s and fixed blades, everything else I purchased from the secondary market at a good discount. If anything it was more a sale shopping addiction, not being able to turn down a good deal if it was something I could see liking in the future.

I am quitting the job at the end of Q1 2024 and moving back to the US to work on my mental health and spend more time with my family. I may end up reselling some of the collection, but my goal is buy a belt grinder and make a setup for finishing and anodizing, and taking more time to enjoy the hobby and knife making.

They’re not counterfeited. I use a XRM spectrometer to test the blade steels and take them apart to compare to dissemble videos online.

That is one of the beauties of JP auction sites: the sale isn’t completed until you agree that the product meets your satisfaction within 1 week. I can test the blades in that time and still cancel any purchases that might be coubterfeit
