My "issue" and attempt at long term-1 knife life

I carried a Kershaw Blackout exclusively for 6-7 years. Then I bought a bunch of knives to find a different EDC for a change of pace. My Benchmade Auto Presidio has been my only EDC work knife for 3 years and counting. My Southern Grind Spider Monkey has been almost my exclusive off-duty EDC since I bought it last September. I say "almost" because I carry my Spyderco Salt I to the beach and kayaking. So I've done the one knife thing for awhile and now I'm pretty much doing the two knife thing. It works well for me.

Hi Boss -

I have seen the one knife challenge done here several times - a little searching might bring those threads up for you, but I am being a bad, lazy man at the moment.

However, I do have one and only one true EDC that I carry come heck or high water, and that is my little VIC Waiter. It has been with me every day for many years.

For my rotation, I always have a one-handed opening clip-on modern knife and sometimes rotate in a traditional slip joint for fun or for a specific reason.

If doing the one knife challenge is how you enjoy the hobby, that is cool! Make it more fun by documenting the year here and post pictures every week or so to show the progression of the patination of the knife, and what you are using your "one year knife" for as the lone soldier in your daily cutting war.

Good luck!

best

I will do that.
I will decide tonight, and start a thread.
Lots of replies folks! Wow thanks!

I've carried the same "left pocket knife" for about 7 years now; the Emerson Karambit.
It fits nicely in the pocket, and is great for all my curved blade cutting tasks (some tasks are easier with a curved blade).

The "right pocket knife" changes quite often, occasionally more than once in a single day.

One knife for a year?
Nah, ain't for me. ;)

Wise, Stabs. Best of both worlds that way!

Howdy!
Hope that title wasn't too confusing.

Lately, I've "embarked" on a challenge for myself.
Decide on a knife, and carry it and ONLY it for 1 year.

Really hard to do.
Everytime I put one in my pocket, I feel as though it's the one, until I think about my other knives.

Has anybody else tried this?
How the heck did you stop changing your EDC?

Oh, and if you want, throw up a picture of your knife and how long you carried it.

Well knives are no different than any of the other things that one collects. Once one enters the world of collecting things you are subject to all the pressures that keep telling you another $50 gets you better whatever. This never ends no matter what you spend you just keep spending more and more. Without a doubt once you start spending time on forums for what you're collecting expect to spend far more than you ever intended. I know of no one that's satisfied with what they have, there's always something better. Collections never are one.

This TC Barlow everday for 13 plus months. I made a thread about it when I hit a year to the day:thumbup:

I carried the same knife for 13 years, then I discovered bladeforums. Here she is, my wife(girlfriend at the time) bought it for me.

I've had the same wife for almost 21 years! I can't see where you guys get away with multiple wives, and even changing them within the same day!

Sorry, had to do it, as my ear heard it that way. Anyway, I can't even begin to do a one-knife-only thing. I just love them all so much. It's like trying to pick your favorite kid, and ignore the others. Not gonna happen.

I do have favorites, though, that make it into my pocket more often than others. There's about 5 or so, that 1 of them will always be nearby, or on my person. Those being: Microtech LLC D/A, Benchmade 730CFHS, A. G. Russell Gent's liner-lock Titanium bolsters and burl scales, ZT 0600, and the Bladeforums' GEC 2013 traditional half-congress.

I am still wondering why anyone would want to carry only one knife for a year or more. Only one knife! In this day and age! What are knife manufacturers going to do?

Most of my life has included having a single knife in my pocket. As my life style has changed, so has my knife. As my daily task have changed, so has my knife. But, I am finally to the point that I can see some merit in the idea of two knife carry or an EDC rotation system and now you folks come along and change the rules by saying only knife for the rest of your life!

Next time, please send out a memo letting me know a change is coming, would you? Jeez, how is a guy expected to be cool without advance notice? And I was finally beginning to think that I was part of the "in" crowd.

All joking aside, I am becoming very comfortable and happy with the knives I now own. Maybe I am one step closer to one knife for life, myself.

I can't even carry 1 knife at a time, even relaxing at home, and certainly don't see myself carrying only 1 knife and it be the same one for a year. Heck, I even sleep with a knife and that's about the only time I only have 1 knife on me.

I see nothing wrong with carrying what you like and having a favorite that you carry for a year or more straight. But I don't see the point in making yourself carry the same knife every day for a year unless you want to. Life is too short to force yourself to do things or not do things that you enjoy.

I could do this, and have done this for many years with a knife I really liked, but even there I was also carrying a couple other knives and would have no problem forcing something if I could also carry some of the other ones I like and want to carry.

I think there might be better things to attempt to do for a year. Like exercise every day, not do a bad habit every day, do a good deed every day, say something nice to a stranger every day, etc. But that's just my opinion and I guess we all have our reasons for doing the things we do and if carrying the same knife every day for a year is what tickles your fancy, then more power to you!

Good luck with it! Maybe you should get a backup you can keep in something you carry with you or your car so if you are running late one day and forget it at home, you don't mess up your 1 year attempt and it's all for naught?

I don't rotate EDC's. Might occasionally switch to something different for a day or two if there is an absolute need, (like a Skeletool or such) but that's pretty rare. It just moves with my wallet and keys - constantly just switching from one pair of pants to another.

Right now, I've been carrying the same Manix 2 since I bought it 6 or 8 months ago. Will probably keep carrying it for the next 2 or 3 years or more.

Before that, it was A Kershaw leek for about 2 or 3 years.
That replaced a lost Gerber F.A.S.T that I had for a few years.

I carried a Kershaw Blackout exclusively for 6-7 years.

Before the others, I EDC'ed a Blackout for around 10 years. Loved that knife, as it was like an old friend. Then the wife ran it through the washer and dryer (neglected to check my jeans before changing laundry) and it was just never the same. Blade has some play in it, and the lock isn't secure. I've taken it apart a thousand times, but I just can't make it right. Still have it, just don't trust it as a working EDC, so it sits in a tool bag in the truck where it occasionally comes out to play...

Been carrying a Griptillian for 3 years now. Once my wayfarer gets here that will take its place along with my leatherman wave. Issue I am already seeing is Olamic is gonna eat up my cash like a vacuum. Knives have the look and steel I crave for. Wish I liked Spydys but the blade hump when closed and that hole just make me look at like a animal more so than a knife if that makes sense.

Been doing that for 5 years now with my E4 PE FFG. Just about the perfect carry knife. In full disclosure, I guess I do have a SAK on my keys but the blade is virtually useless; it sees use for screw drivers and bottle tops mostly.

I used to swap constantly or even carry two knives. Hit a financial tough spot a few years back and put my buying and collecting on hold. Since I came back to it I have been pretty good about having two knives in my rotation, one for my time at work and another for when I am in casual clothes outside of work. A couple of promotions have led to my duties being managerial more often than my time in the trenches. This has led for a reduced need for the large overbuilt folders with 3.75 inch plus blades. So as my necessary uses change so does the knife. I now carry a spyderco southard at work and a mini bodega outside of work. This will most likely be my rotation for a long time. Something would have to really catch my eye or something horrible would have to happen to one of them to warrant replacement.
