I while I was out doing some running around something was dropped of at the bike shop for me, yup finally got the last major part for my GIB, the VFD. Holy crap this thing is larger than I thought:eek: I ordered it about a week ago and in my hands today so pretty fast. thing is I had ask about the On/Off switch because I wanted it and was told that it came pre installed. Unfortunately there was a communication error and what is pre installed is the Run/Stop switch not the On/Off switch. I tried searching for the specifications on the switch to see if I could get one locally but can't find any information. So if anyone knows the specs on the switch could you let me know what they are?

I was hoping to have the grinder up and running this weekend, if I can find a switch.

Thanks
George

Re the main power switch

I used a toggle switch

You could use a SPST switch, but in case the live/neutral lines are reversed on an outlet , and in general I just over build things, I used a DPST and switched both lines.

http://www.gardnerbender.com/pdf/products/Switches.pdf

Both rated at 1.5 HP which is the motor rating, if you had 2 HP motor ,you would base the switch on that.
GSW-14 is what I used

GSW10 would also work.

GSW20 is the boot cover – probably not available at the stores listed above, but automotive parts suppliers tend to stock them.

I was able to buy it locally at HomeDepot / Lowes / Home Hadware /
Canadian tire also lists it, and youcan check inventory online by selecting your local store

I used crimp on eyes to attach the wires to.

How's that for service?

I will post pics when its done, I still have to make a mounting bracket and pick up a couple of fittings for the wiring.

The local KB dealer doesn't stock the switch and doesn't know the specs, tried them first:o

I just wired in a double pole 220 style light switch to the incoming line . $ 9.00 plus outlet box . Whats the big deal ?

No big deal, I am wiring it up for a plug and 115V so I can move and use it any where it if needed. The switch the 12345678910 linked me to is just what I needed and easier than the light switch and cheaper:thumbup:

I still have to buy some conduit and wire tomorrow and make up my bracket to mount the VFD and I am up and running

I read Rob's notes and posts on wire gauge

14 gauge 3 wire on the input from plug to VFD. Black-White-Ground green.
16 gauge 4 wire between the VFD and the Motor.

You could go larger, but the thinner wire meets the needs and much is easier to work with.

I got lucky some time ago and found an unused Leeson 1.5hp 3 phase motor for $50. The guy bought an industrial table saw and converted it to single phase so he could use it at home. I had the motor before I ordered the GIB.

Nice... have you been running it without the VFD? I had to call Rob and get somehelp with the wiring VFD to Motor. He has a diagram of the wiring on his site. I am lame like that.

Can't run a 3 phase motor without 3 phase power, that is why I need the VFD, to convert my single phase power to 3 phase. If everything goes as planned I should be spinning by Friday night or Saturday morning, that means I need to order some steel soon:thumbup:

Haha... see Lame at those things, disregard

Unki, Where did you order your VFD from? I will be ordering one very soon. Just wondering if you shopped around, and could save me some time.

I went with Wayne Coe, he wasn't the cheapest, but he was close and the only one willing to bill to my Canadian address and ship to a US address I had access to. It saved me shipping and border fees. I was at the US address 2 days ago, but dropped off to me today.

I found a site that has them for $340.00, but I'm not sure about shipping, or the switch that Wayne supplies.

Who did you find that was cheaper than Wayne? I don't have to worry about shipping issues.

Thanks

Walker Industrial has them for 331 and Galco has them for 350. Wayne was 375 with free shipping CONUS. Once I added in the shipping, duty and such Wayne was cheaper for me.
