1. I'm only acquiring fixed blade knives and scout pattern folders (plus any potential BF 2017 KOY) in 2017.

2. Other than a select few, I'm off loading all my other many folders. Some I'll give away here. Others I'll trade.

I commend you on your desire to do both of these, wish you luck and look forward to seeing what you decide to offload.

Happy new Year my friend!

Sounds good, Leghog. I am resolving to be more of a user and less of a collector in 2017. Happy New Year !!!

Try just using (and enjoying) what you already have for 2017. It's a real challenge, but it is free. You will really know what you like and why when you are done with the year. I have done this from time to time and it has served me well. BTW, I have found that the scout type knives are a good choice for users.

I'm actually wondering if I can make it through 2017 without buying any knives. I bought a ton of knives in 2016, and many of them are gorgeous, but almost all of them are just sitting in their little tubes and boxes. I'm actually using 4 of the maybe 35 knives I bought. I'm currently using my D2 Buck 110, new Micarta beer Scout, my Texas Camp knife, and my new Case scout. The rest just sit there. And to be truthful, those 4 knives suit me just fine. I could probably even eliminate the Buck 110, as the Texas Camp knife is about the same size.

There's more to it than utility though. Since my father-in-law passed away in the fall, the urge to knife collect has dwindled greatly. I no longer have that physical person to collect and trade with. It was sort of "our thing", and it's gone now. Knife collecting is a lot of fun, but once you remove the physical people from the equation, and the physical interactions, it's just not the same. I see myself as focusing more on using my existing knives in 2017, and posting about my outdoor experiences with them, instead of more acquisitions.

That could change of course, if GEC decides to put out a standard sized scout pattern in 2017. I'd be all over that in a major way. It would be my grail knife. But for now, I'm feeling like my Case scout and Texas Camp knife might seriously be "the ones". I no longer even harbor the thought of a single knife being my one knife for life, but I can see those two knives as being all I need. A standard scout for every day use, and the larger model for hiking and camping.

So we'll see. I have a canvas Micarta Mudbug preordered and paid for, and another Case scout shipping to me, but that's all I have on the horizon.

I'm among those who are going to try to enjoy what I already have and not buy any knives in 2017. I must be losing my mind because even with this plan in place I'm planning to attend a knife show on January 28th just because I enjoy the "hobby".

If I can go to that knife show, look at all those knives, and not buy a single one then that will be a good start. It will be a good time and shear torture all wrapped up in one.

I'm actually looking forward to the challenge.

That is an admirable resolution. I would like to say I'll control my spending a little better than I did in 2016, but I'm not sure if that is likely to happen. :D

I need to not get caught up in the SFO Lolly Scramble in 2017. Unless it's something really special, I just need to let them pass. Stressing about internet connections and notification times isn't worth it.

I resolve to buy only knives that "speak" to me. Those that are special and in some way relate to me on a personal level. That being said, my knife purchases will slow down a little, but I do not intend to stop. An easy resolution to keep. ;)

I have already sold/traded most of my tactical knives. I still have a few ZT folders that I am hanging on to, but that's pretty much it.

My other resolution is to start carrying a fixed blade more often. I have started carrying my BRK Essential in the past few weeks, but I would like to purchase and carry a small Fiddleback or similar knife as well.

I also intend to take more interesting pictures. Once the weather changes and it is no longer cold and grey all the time, I resolve to put my Canon to use and really get some nice pictures - knife themed, of course.

Interesting that many so far want to get less knives and use the knives they have. I have had the same thoughts, but know it won't happen.
I will tho strive to go through the collection and sell to good homes the one I feel I can let go. Very difficult for a guy who hasn't sold a single knife since joining BF. I have been fortunate to be able to collect and handle a number of knife styles. Determine for myself what works as a user and as a collectible to admire. Healthy enough to enjoy the 2-3 times a week I go on a long hike and carry a knife that I occasionally use and take a picture of.;):p:D:thumbup::thumbup:
Less buying? Well I have found the niche in my collecting that has rung my bell: scout folders and getting custom fixed blade knives from the GA Knifemakers Guild...and probably other customs (Salem Straub, Jim Dunlap) as the budget holds. 3-4 GEC's vs a custom...for me equals custom.

My resolution is largely the complete opposite, much to the chagrin of my wife, I am sure. :D

Over the last few to several years my collection has remained somewhat stagnant where I might buy 1 or 2 knives a year at the most, some of those being gifts for others. Kids, fluctuating budgets, and life in general tends to make you adjust your priorities as needed. So as a result, I had pretty much buried my passion for cutlery, not allowing myself to get too excited about sharp pointy things for quite some time.

Well, revisiting BladeForums recently pretty much brought that addiction raging back and I am rearing to start expanding my collection significantly this year. It helps that I have a great job that is stable and lucrative, as does my wife, so it is just a matter of reallocating funds from the gun budget, or the hunting budget, or the misc. hobby budget... You know, adjusting priorities... ;)

My fascination and interest in traditional cutlery has grown considerably since discovering this sub-forum and I expect my collection to expand accordingly to accommodate such interests. I hope to have a lot more to show you fellows this coming New Year.

I think I'm going to try to get out of my Case and Buck realm and look into different brands. Instead of getting something just because it's in my budget, I'll save it until I can get something nicer. In other words, quality over quantity....

- No impulse buying
- Use vs. collect
- Take better pictures for posting
- Get better (hopefully a lot better) at sharpening

I've carried the same two knives everyday. One for over a year. The other for nearly a year. I'm 55 and have carried a knife since I was 12 or 13. I already know what I like and why.

Something my Great Grandfather, (1884 - 1973) a proud and practical man, told me when I was a teenager: "A higher price does not guarantee longer lasting or higher quality." (and in the case of a doctor, a higher price does not guarantee more knowledge or better care.)

Personally, I don't see any problems with quality on the few Case and Buck knives I own. Nor on the Rough Rider, Colt, and Marbles I have, either, for that matter.

Sober up man!

That's crazy talk.

Keep us posted on your progress.

I tried something like that in 2016.
I think I have more knives now than I did when I started to reduce the herd.

I have no doubt I'll be successful. First step is a local gun show where one gent always has some good vintage knives. I'll see what folders I have that he'll trade for what sheath knives he has that interests me.

I am in the same boat, I find that the general purpose scout type knife has been riding in my pocket everyday, and I generally carry a Christy knife on my key ring (a lot of the men in my family did much the same). Between the two of them, I have no problem doing what needs done. I still like what I have kept over the years, but don't buy just to try out a pattern so much now.
