My Knife Resolutions for 2017

1. I'm only acquiring fixed blade knives and scout pattern folders (plus any potential BF 2017 KOY) in 2017.

2. Other than a select few, I'm off loading all my other many folders. Some I'll give away here. Others I'll trade.

I applaud your aim!:thumb up:

There comes a time in our life when we know when we've had enough. Enough guns, enough tools, and sometimes enough knives. By the time we reach old codger age, most times we've figured out what works for us, and we loose interest in the things that don't, so they go down the road. Gift off, sell off, whatever. I can identify where your going.

I used to just have and use a few knives, I've used some knives only for many years. I have a drink occasionally, smoke cigars (one a week maybe two) during our warm months.

So really no real vices, I work and worked hard all my life so what the hell, I'll buy MANY knives this coming year and in years to come. I've sold them in the past when an unexpected bill would arise. Pretty much guns and knives don't depreciate so I see it as cash sitting there if I need it.

I enjoy knives to much not to indulge. Beats sittin in a bar, getting drunk and fighting...been there done that, thought it was fun when I was young, maybe it was?

So, like a chicken in the barnyard, if it's shiney (and sharp) I'll more than likely buy it if I like it.

Well said, Paul. You and I think a lot alike, sir!

Thanks John, I appreciate leghog and others similar approach in reducing/minimalism approach. But I'd be lying to myself if I thought I would. I'm having to much fun buying, selling and gifting knives. Someday I'll have to seriously unload but now is not the time for me at least.

If you see it, like it, can afford it, buy it:thumbup::)

i've had a strange 2016. i took a break from BF for about 6-7 months. not really intentional, just kinda happened. but, when i got back, i bought a bunch of knives (8-10).

now, i don't mind that necessarily, as i like to try ones that look like they're in my wheelhouse. and, if they're not, i just flip them.

BUT...i did go a bit overboard. honestly, downsizing is constructive for me. it gets me to put all my knives in my hand and really consider whether i "like" them.

heck, i guess all this is just a "pursuit". i just wish i knew what i was chasing. :o :D

i know i'm doubling-up here, but now you've made me think. i never really did answer your question. i.e. what are my 2017 knife resolutions?

the last couple years, my general life resolutions have been, "do the things you always talk about doing". i have a list of knife-type projects....knives waiting for handles, knives waiting to be re-handled, knives waiting for sheaths, sharpen my lady's kitchen knives, etc. i will add to that....learn.

there is so much i don't know in this hobby that i appreciate. in 2017, i would like to talk to more people; take the time to acquire more skills; whittle; test the knives that i think i "like"; etc....

my previous post really just talks about "things"...the knives i acquire. perhaps i got that all wrong. quite simply, i would like to spend less and learn more. focus more on the people and knowledge within this community.

Limited finances and job changes kept my knife buying pretty low the last several years. During that time I didn't buy something unless I really knew I'd use it, or the money came from selling other knives. Since finally finishing my degree and landing with a more stable job at the beginning of this year I finally was able to look at buying knives again on impulse. Didn't happen. Bought a couple of folders (ZT & Benchmade) as a present to myself for finishing my degree and 1 LT Wright fixed blade at BLADE. Shoot I'm hardly using the ones I have, and there is enough of them that I can rotate them. My knife buying has become very selective and thought out over the last few years.

I've carried the same two knives everyday. One for over a year. The other for nearly a year. I'm 55 and have carried a knife since I was 12 or 13. I already know what I like and why.

What are the two you've carried this past year? I've come to pretty much the same situation. I carry the same few favorites and the rest see only occasional pocket time.

2016 in terms of knives and watches, two of my favorite hobbies, was a year of excess. I bought, I gave/I sold, and now I wish to cut back. In 2017, I hope to offload some of the production knives mainly some of me extra GECs and schatt and morgans  (if any one would buy them) and try to either go for higher end stuff or nothing at all. I know for watches I definitely went higher end and have been off loading some slowly. The buy whatever you like approach is sort of wasteful because they are impulse purchases a lot of the time. Got to learn to let go of some things

BUY LESS KNIVES - same as most years :o :D

Carry some 'Old Friends' more

Get organazized! :D

I hope to only buy GEC knives that really appeal to me and replenish my give away knives with some others as I went on a marathon of gifting knives this past year and have nothing left to gift at the moment and I do so enjoy giving someone a nice knife.:D

2016 was a very slow year as far as purchases go. I'm hoping to catch up on (quite)a few patterns that I missed out on.

I don't have any particular resolution for 2017. I have been winding down my knife acquisitions for a couple of years now. I only bought 3 pocket knives in 2016 (one GEC, two SAKs) and really have no plans to add any more in 2017.

My only knife-related goal, which is not a traditional topic per se, is to do some more cooking and get some use out of my kitchen knives.

i'm with ya. one of my favorite knife purchases i made was a gyoto from chefsknivestogo a couple years ago. it makes a big difference. and, i just bought a petty knife from KSF a few days ago. not sure why i waited so long. cheers. and good luck.

So after having a discussion with my wife regarding my knife purchasing needs (yes, they are needs :D), I have refined my New Year resolution. Over time we have discovered that when we are both on the same page when it comes to budgeting and spending, things go so much more smoothly where the whole "buy it now, ask for forgiveness later" concept usually ends badly (usually my fault).

So after our discussion, I have determined that I will look to purchase one new knife per month as a goal. If there is a tighter month than normal or I have my eye on something particularly expensive, then there are plenty of budget friendly options out there that can serve as "Knife of the Month". If I stay on task, then by the end of 2017 I should have at least 12 new knives, any more than that I will consider a bonus.

My knife related resolutions are ones that I WILL be able to keep.

1) Buy more knives

2) Make more knives

3) Sell some knives

4) Throw more knives

I mean, why make resolutions that you cant keep. :D:D
