my knife storage system: pelican case 1600

I put all the knives in zip lock bags and tried to squeeze as much air out of the bag as possible before sealing it, but there's some room between the liners so there will be some air in there no matter what.

I guess it's theoretically possible to suck all the air out with a vacuum cleaner, but it seems like it'd be really difficult to get it ALL out without a valve of sorts.

any moisture in the air will also be in the bags.
as I said here: my knife storage system: pelican case 1600 because of the goretex any moisture can get out of the case. no reaction of the knives with the foam.

Hmm, I spent 2-3 hours putting all my knives in ziplock bags.. :|

But what you said was a concern. Any moisture will be trapped in the ziplock bag, and have nowhere to go. I think it's better to put the knives in the foam, and use desiccant packs to make sure any moisture goes to them.

I could probably put a desiccant pack in every single ziplock bag, but it would be a significant hassle to replace them every once in awhile for every single knife. And I'm not sure it's such a good idea to put a desiccant right next to a knife inside a ziplock bag in any case. If there's moisture inside of the bag and it does its job, the packet would eventually become wet.

I assume the primary reason why manufacturers wrap their items in plastic inside the foam is to prevent any damage if the package gets wet during shipping. But I'm not sure how good it is to wrap it in a plastic bag for long term storage..

If you are looking for long term storage, nothing like a Cosmoline bath, then shrink wrapped, sealed completely in hot wax, then submerged in a strong concrete mix in 55 Gallon Steel Drums,.... or simply keeping them in an air temprature and humidity controlled enviroment like most homes in the United States in a drawer. Either way and they will be just fine.
